I'm going to letter a large box truck for a customer soon. The truck often gets scuffed up by branches when going up narrow driveways. This only affects the top 12-18" of the box.
Would it do any good to cover the lettering in that area with a clear coat? Would that help protect from at least some of the potential damage to the new lettering?

you could...it might help a little..but that's not really something you should guarantee to your customer...if they are so concerned about it they could put clear lexan over the side..expensive and probably will look crappy. the vinyl is going to get stratched..period..not much you can do about it. i have seen some of my box trucks with the same gig going on, 12 - 18 inches on the top part...i don't lose any sleep over it. you can only do your best...you can't control whats not in your power.

I concur with Karyn, that's considered normal wear and tear for their trucks and that's really on them. Not sure what kind of vinyl your using but I'd recomend a heavy mylar over-laminantover the whole graphic. That should give you some decent protection. The mylar doesn't last as long as vinyl but it will extend the life of a graphic that goes through that much abuse. If you get a year or so out of it you might be doing pretty good for this application.

I've seen this problem with primarily Moving Trucks. That's why we paint the graphics with stock colors (out of the can) One Shot. Every so often the I would go in and touch em' all up. Not only do they get scratched , but gouged as well.
