My little studio is a study in what works as a minimum for me rather than the ultimate studio of my dreams.
We affectionately call it the dungeon, because it is in the basement. L-shaped with only bitsy windows it is way too tiny and poorly lit. My previous studio was more than 500 square feet, whereas this is only about 200 square feet. Kinda squishy.
But it will be fine until we build a new house/studio soon. Much of my stuff is packed away in boxes, waiting for more spacious quarters.
The walls are lined with shelves holding thousands of books and periodicals. And binders hold tens of thousands of photos I have taken through the years. The cork boards behind my desk hold drawings, sketches and ideas for current projects I'm working on (four major ones are currently on the go)
Remaining walls are covered with framed drawings and photos, both my art and the art of others I enjoy. Study models and cool toys (research material) are everywhere.
Every remaining nook and cranny are stuffed with my antique treasures gathered through the years. Most are not worth much save for the memories they carry. Some are reminders of people or places, others serve as inspiration. I like the clutter around me.
I believe our creative space says much about us.

That looks nice Dan. Makes me want to get more framed stuff on the walls. I can see how you would miss having had 300 additional sq. feet.

In the past few years, I've been working on de-cluttering my studio, and putting up cool stuff (other than my toys) for folks to look at while they are here. Here's photo of our studio/computer area. I've posted this before showing the difference between my side and Dave's. Dave's side has since gotten more interesting, as I've posted some photos and drawings up on his wall. Here is my present work table. I used to have rolls of vinyl hung on that wall, but have moved them to a closet, and will put shop samples up there instead. I am currently having another work table built that will be enclosed cabinets, with a woodgrain mica finish. Something that looks more upscale. The plotter will also have a matching mica top, and will be less obtrusive. work/conference table
I've been putting forth an effort to keep this area clean and clutterfree. It takes quite abit of discipline to put things back each time you use tools and such. It's amazing how motivating it is to approach each new job when there isn't a mess to clean up from the previous one first.
My shop area is an absolute mess right now though. It's presently undergoing a face lift too. I'll wait to share that with you. hahaaa!

When you said you call your work area in the basement the "dungeon", I related immediatly!.....Until I saw the picks....man, those are like finished rooms!
My woodworking shop is in my basement.....dirt floor, stone walls and hand hewn chestnut beams with the bark still on em....the oldest section being built in 1755. I have to duck under furnace pipes just to get to a spot where I can stand upright....
My carving studio is on the first floor in what was once a dinning room....I've got a nice view from the window in front of my carving bench and my schtuff hangs on the walls. Neat and tidy are not two words that describe my work space! If I didn't have my little Chisel Jam once a year....it would be total .....well, never mind...
