My son's teacher asked if we could make a magnetic sign for her classroom. A sign where she can attach magnets to. I'm having a hard time finding a magnetic substrate. It needs to be custom made to fit the area she wants.

Sorry - forgot to ask if any of you knew where to get a magnetic substrate? Not a magnet but a pre-painted thin metal (or whatever) sign where magnets can be used on. Most of the metals we find are thick and not prepainted. We are looking for something simliar to what you find on a file cabinet. Something thin and pre painted. Hope this makes sense??

Check out your local tin-basher shop, heating type companies. They ussually deal with galvanized steel. Have them cut you a piece, clean/dress the edges and you just apply an intermediate vinyl to one face, and viola, your done.

How about using dry erase markers on the painted metal or vinyl-covered metal surface? That wouldn't work, right? She wanted a surface where she can use magnets on as well as dry erase or wipeable markers. This is for a pre-school class - would vinyl tear easily?

Product Sign Supply (800-540-9199) has a material called "rubber steel" It looks kind of like magnetic sheeting & has an adhesive surface on one side. It is designed for being magnetic receptive. It is most likely more expensive then some galvanized metal, but would cut to unusual shape much easier, & not be as sharp an edge to finish for use by kids.
Dry erase vinyl is available from the same folks (my experience is it does not erase as well if you use the wrong marker or leave the marks on a long time, so don't expect it to be eraseable forever regardless. Maybe plan on them needing to re-surface it on occassion.)

I've always used a metal sheet called "Uniclad" that we get cut to size from a local sheet-metal shop. Not sure what colors are available as we always got white and covered in vinyl. I'm sure you could find the same product at a sheet metal supplier near you.
Another option which I've been wanting to try is to use magnetic paint from Kling Magnetics(link below). The paint stores around here stock the paint. I guess you use it as a paint or primer and can be painted over with a top coat of any desired color. The paint "Turns any wall into a Magnetic receptive Surface".
