My 1 yr old Lab-Shepherd cross "Tequila" just figured out that good things are found in pockets. We have a rack with a dozen winter jackets hanging on it and I had some loose peppermints in my jacket pocket and after sniffing them out he is now checking out the pockets on the other jackets. Sometimes I swear he doesn't know he is a dog. One of the funniest stories about Tequila happened this summer. I was driving the car with the window down half way - low enough that he could hang his head out, but too high for him to fall out of. Tequila always thinks that things could be better so he figured if he stood on the doors arm rest he would be able to hang his head farther out the window. Unfortunately for him he was unfamiliar with the concept of automatic windows and managed to engage the "window up" feature. I heard this strangled yelp and looked over top see him hanging from the window, all fours in full flight. Tequila now figures that he should crawl over me while I'm driving to hang out the window, cause it isn't the BAD window. Lets hear your "doggie tails". Here is a pic of my best bud!

LOL...... well I have been so busy lately I haven't been able to play with my new little puppy Bailey as much as I would like. I do take him along to get supplies and to deliver signs. Today I know he was a little disappointed that I hadn't played with him much, so when we went to get vinyl...I bought him a hamburger from McDonalds. The lady we bought Bailey from said to cook him hamburger, rice peas and carrots....so I knew the hamburger would be ok for him. He loved it, and felt very special for getting a treat other than my cooking! I just love this little guy!!

Hey Cheryl... just a quickie heads up for you...
When you're out and about with Bailey, make sure you don't bring him anywhere that other dogs have been. He hasn't had all his vaccinations yet and there are viruses out there that he could pick up that could be fatal, such as parvo.
Good thing he's little, that way you can carry him all over!
Also, maybe some people food as a treat RARELY, but you'd be better off getting him on a high quality, nutritional complete puppy food. I know I know, I hear it all the time about treats and such, but in the long run your dog will be healthier. Their digestive systems get accustomed to the diet, and changes can cause diarrhea. (I never can remember how to spell that!!)

Thanks Dana! He is on Nutro Natural Choice puppy dry food and Avoderm canned puppy food. But the lady we got him from really did say to feed him cooked hamburger, rice, peas and carrots. He loves the carrots! I have always fed my dogs people food along with their regular dog food. Scraps like a little bit of meatloaf....mixed in with their food. Or some steak pieces cut in small bites. Astro loved apples! But would spit every pea out. Bailey loves peas!! and carrots. I hope I am not doing anything bad by giving him a bit of people food. I never give him anything else but hamburger or steak. Please let me know any other helpful hints you have. It has been a long time since I have had a puppy. He is going in for his second set of shots in one week.

When I get really busy at the shop, and don't have a lot of time for Miss Bailey, I have this 10 year old girl take her out for a walk, swim, play etc. The little girl told me one day that she could sure tell that I was Miss B's mom...'cause she "has my eyes". What a hoot! My eyes are blue, Miss B's are brown! I think she meant sometimes people and thier pet show similarities.

Some people opened up a pet grooming shop down the street from me and called it "Doggie Style" ha ha - I think it's great, but the city has no sense of humor and made them change it. Bo -- Ring.

Cheryl, (and Dana too) and anyone else that cares..
People food is a tricky subject when it comes to your dog.
Hamburger is OK, but it needs to be BOILED so all the fat rises to the top of the water and out of the meat.
Chicken is even better for your dog than hamburger because it contains less protein.. yes, less protein is better for your dog.. and it still needs to be boiled off so the fat isn't there.
The reason less protein is better, it's easier for your pet to digest. More protein requires the pancreas to introduce more enzymes into the system, and this can kick off pancreasitis which is where the pancreas is putting out so many enzymes, the pancreas actually digests itsself.
I've gone through all this stuff with my dog, and I rarely ever fed her people food. She was more sensitive to it because of a pre-existing autoimmune disease.
My dog is now on a bland diet because she cannot stomach anything. She gets dry cereal dog food (better for your pet than the canned stuff) in the morning, and in the evening she gets boiled hamburger (honestly it's easier to mash than chicken and the portion is very small) and rice along with vitamin supplements because the meat and rice lack other things she needs... she gets the meat and rice so she'll actually take her medications, it's the only way she wont separate the pills and spit them out.

thanks Mike! We have always given our pets some people food...steak or chicken and sometimes rice. But no seasoning. Like I said, the lady we bought Bailey from swears by hamburger, rice, peas and carrots. I rinse the fat off twice so he isn't getting all the grease.

Hi all, My baby just turned 2 (that's 14 in dog years) and he's entered a new phase. He's now testing me in his teen years....so the breeder tells me. Rocky insists on keeping my customers on the front doormat. He either holds or nips at their pant leg. He's a shiloh shepherd and this is his natural herding instict.....NOTHING AGGRESSIVE. But with his size (30" at the shoulders) he scares the heck out of most. So I have him back on a leash again all the time in the house so I can grab him & put him in his down stay manually! I seem to be back on the uphill swing on over coming this. I raised my son almost thru his terrible teens.... I wasn't expecting to go thru it again!
And my (stray) doberman....Rocky's new best friend just did the window thing too but put it down and jumped out the window at a red light in town. Everyone knows us so they helped me grab her. Now when I leave the house and give my son the list of things to remember he cockily replies...."ya and lock the windows so none of the dogs fall out mom!"
