Yesterday I was photographing a sign I recently made and installed in a local shopping mall and security came by and asked me to stop photographing it because I need permission from the mall manager to take photos of anything within the mall. I was a little shocked to say the least. I didn't bother going to see the manager because I was running late for an appointment.
Has anything this ever happened to anyone else? Gosh.... what next...... special permission to take photos in resorts?????

I probably would have immediately snapped a picture of the security guard as he was talking to me, just to see him flinch.

Cameras are not allowed in some junkyards in California. They search any tool boxes and packages you carry in.
But they don't search your pockets, hee hee

We did almost 6 years of continuous work at West Edmonton Mall. The last time I was there and I was taking photos of some of our past projects. I was challenged by security and told I needed a permit. I just hung low until they were gone and then resumed.
Permission was not hard to get and in fact I later spoke with the general manager and he said no problem. I has his personal permission to take all I needed.
But I understand where they are coming from. We don't let people come into Giggle Ridge and photograph the people there golfing... although folks are welcome to take all the pictures they desire if they are golfing on the course.
The reason is that people are freaked out about strangers having pictures of their kids and used for who knows what. It is a wierd world out there.
I have even had some very serious people complain about someone snapping pictures of them while they are out playing. I personally think people are being overly paranoid but respect their wishes.
I know in many workplaces that employers prohibit the taking of any pictures in case the photographer should capture a hazard which might break some rule in regard to safety.

Videotaped (for 2 minutes) Disney on Ice and a security guard stomed me and cupped his hand over the lens telling me if I was to continue he would confiscate the film. This was 2 days ago in Calgary. Surprised because I taped the same show 7 years ago not a problem. It wasn't like it was a friggin Aerosmith concert......GEEZ!!!!!!!!

Several years ago I was at Graceland and I inadvertantly carried my video camera into Elvis' jet and videoed everything inside and walked out. I only later saw the sign about cameras so I must have some rare footage as I was not challenged. The same thing happened to me in 1990 in Washington at the FBI centre. Let's not forget that most mall security guards have the IQ levels and interpretive judement facilities of a houseplant. They're just thrilled to be in charge of something. Anything.

Some of my relatives went to London (England, not Arkansas) and snuck a video camera into the room that has all of the crown jewels, which is a HUGE no-no. They have about 5 minutes of film, with my aunt in the background asking every 30 seconds if the camera is running, and not to let the guards catch them! The film ends with a guard yelling at them and then it appears the guy filming is tackled to the ground and everything turns to static. It is a classic scene that would give Jeff Foxworthy plenty of material! My relatives consider that the highlight of the trip, pulling on over on the "motherland" and all them "fureners" I'm sure the were bragging about as they boarded the plane home with there "styrofome Ice chests w/ duct tape" luggage!

This happened to me alot. First time I was working in Egypt unloading our equipment off of ships. We were briefed that no cameras whatsoever were allowed on the docks. Right before I left, I bought a 35 mm "idiot camera" that fit perfectly in the ammo pouch of my belt. I had lookouts on the docks whenever I took a pic, (mainly because of the armed gaurds).
I was on the flightline snapping pics of Eqyptian F-4 Phantoms, (I was right on the guys wingtip), he was hollerin like crazy at me, but, he also had 4 jets behind him, so he had to take off, lol.
The Egyptians landed a bunch of MIGS at the base one day, we heard about it and drove right by the jets snapping pics.
AF 1 taxied right by our maintenance truck one day, and I happened to have my camera, so I'm hanging out the window snapping pics, and the pilot is pointing at me and gesturing, (to me), that he is on his radio calling someone that cares, so we got the hell out of there and I put my camera away.
Last summer Sonny Barger was walking across the street during the rally. I didn't take his picture, (I am a believer in his security)!
