What type of vinyl could be used to create Exit signs that glow in the dark for a while after the lights go out? I need to either buy the vinyl or the finished signs from somebody who produces these. Is there a more profesional therm for glow-in-the-dark? I think fluorescent isn't correct, is it? Thanks, Lotti

Hi Lotti, There is/was such a product available called Safe Glo, a glow in the dark adhesive available fron Coburn Corp.,out of New Jersey (732) 367-5511.
I got a flyer about it at the Canadian Sign Show,COSAC, a few years ago from Canadian Signcrafters Supplies, but don't know if they still carry it or make it.

Hi Lotti, I don't know how your sign code works up there, but in the states, and in particular California, "EXIT" sign must be illuminated at all times, one of the reasons is during a fire you can see it through the smoke. Most glow in the dark vinyl will not be enough for that, there are battery back ups in "Exit" sign you can get, but you still have to run power to them, to illuminate them during and after business hours, I typed in "Illuminated Exit Signs" on google and plenty of sources came up, but check your sign code to see what you need to be compliant, the fire dept, might be a start, then maybe the planning dept. in your city.

I've always known it as photo-luminescent. Average quality material glows for about ten minutes. It is very thick. I believe the best quality can glow for about 30 minutes.
Night anglers; when legering, photo-luminescent can be rolled-up in poly tube, threaded and stopped on the hooklink. Makes the weight easy to bring to hand, or to achieve an accurate underarm cast on very dark nights. I also think it attracts fish but,it's impossible to be sure. (Much cheaper than a beta-light). Can re-charged with a small hand torch.

Thank you all for the help. I don't need many of these signs, it's part of a bigger deal, so I would be alright if I could just get a yard of that material. Rick, this is not for a public building, it's for large machinery sheds. I hardly ever have to worry about codes and regulations here. Just out of curiosity: How long does this stuff last? Does it "wear out" and loose the ability to glow?

The EXIT signs here must always be lit and not by electricity, because in a fire you might not have any. They must be an actual EXIT sign made for this purpose and they contain radioactive something to make them glo. If you don't have to worry about regulations, use whatever you want. But, hope there is never a problem because you may be held liable for any consequenses. (Someone dies because they couldn't find EXIT sign) I think you should use the product made for this use that your code requires. They could be expensive and don't do it cheap just because your customer wants it that way. Check the code and use what it requires.
P.S. Grimco has electric ones with a battery backup for about $100.00
P.P.S. They also have glo in the dark signs for about$6.00 It says if exposed to light for a minute, it will glow for several hours. Prices are U.S.
P.P.S. I was in my local True Value store today and they had Glow in the Dark EXIT signs for $7.99. Imagine that.

The light switch is at the far end of my workshop so; I have a few small photo-luminescent arrows, strategically placed, to guide my way out. They've been there six or seven years, I would guess, still working fine.

I just got off the phone with a good freind of mine who is a local Fire Official. I asked him about the "Glow in the Dark" EXIT signs, he stated that they are legal for use in NJ and that they can be used in any location. However if "local ordinance" states differently, then they cannot be used in that town.
So Roy, if you need to use them you should be able to, most respectable supply stores won't sell them if they werent legal.
