I have a headache. A horrible, head splitting, headache. One of those headaches where you know you shouldn't be driving because you can't see straight. I have had this headache for 4 days now. I have taken every kind of drug in our cupboard and even some I had to go to the store to buy. Nothing affects it.

Except, I spent Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday painting. As long as I had a brush in my hand, my head felt fine. I put the brush down, go to get a drink and sit for a minute, boom, heads starts pounding again. Maybe there is something in the fumes of one-shot. Of course, I have to ask "what fumes? I don't smell nothing."

Can anyone explain this phenomena?

That's a very common phenomena that occurs with women about 5 to 6 months after becoming married.

Hubby soon starts hearing "Not tonight dear, I have a splitting headache".

I don't think it has any relationship to 1-Shot, but it may be the after-effects of eating Wedding Cake. [Wink]

Kissy...

Are you using any hardners #4007 or anything out of the Norm?
Keytones,Benzenes,Lacs,Etc.

The paint is usually not the problem, "BUT The Additives" can be!

Go to Bed and hug the Husband and he will make the pain go away until tomorrow!

Remember this is a "Very Dangerous Trade" we work in.

Kissy...

Maybe you have some sort of sinus inflamation that's causing the headaches? an allergy ? It could be that the paint fumes are reducing the inflamation and when you get away from the paint the sinus swells back up?

Just speculation, but if that were the case maybe an antihistamine would help. I'd see a doctor if it persists. [Big Grin]

heheheheheeee ... you are a 1Shot Junkie! The addiction is serious! You can't quit "cold turkey"!!!
You must seek professional help ... attending a Letterhead Meet helps!

PS Kidding aside, Jeff just may have the correct answer.

Hiya Kissy,
It sounds like a trip to the doctor is in order.
Like Stephen said " this is a Very Dangerous Trade".

Good luck,

Checkers

My doctor recommends PLENTY OF FLUIDS.

I tried it and it works better than a good nights sleep!

We always notice that when enamel paint is drying and the fumes mix with natural gas fumes from the furnace, it would casue a whole new stinck. When I worked at home and painted, the laundry in the dryer would smell like those fumes.

The fumes gave my wife bad headaches.

During the months when the furnace wasn't on, we didn't have a problem.

Now I work in a shop, and there is a natural gas furnace there also. The day I painted with oilbase enamels, it stunk up the whole shop for 3 days.

We are finding latex paints much more friendly these days.

I just think it's odd that my head hurts EXCEPT when I'm painting. Maybe there is something to the sinus infection theory. I hadn't thought about that. I was figuring the fumes should be giving me headaches not taking them away. Thanks for the input guys.

Kissy, maybe you just are born to paint something spectacular. Keep on painting.

I used to suffer with migranes but it wasn't from the paint. The only thing that helped was a prescription called Norgesic. It worked like magic. All the over the counter drugs did nothing more that give me an upset stomach.

Kissy,

Bill could be right about that "born to paint". It' kinda like therapy.

My whole body hurts(my fault, I've abused it all my life) except when I am painting. When I have a loaded brush in my hand, all the aches and pains, and all of life's little worries, just go away for as long as I have that brush. Once I clean and store my brushes it all comes back.

I use to suffer from headaches all the time, but only in the old days, when I used to hand letter with 1shot. It was the kind of like a migraine, spots before your eyes, and a throb in the back of my head. Butnow that I'm Computer based I don't have the headaches anylonger.
Did you ever read the ingredients in 1shot? I tell you it's scary.

I noticed that the last time I took all the drugs in the cupboard, I ended up with a pretty serious headache too..............

I did notice that I had one hell of a buzz for about a week before the headache started though......

I tried that for several more years with the same results............

Now the cupboards bare and the headaches seem to have gone away............

Wonder if this means something..........?????

Think I'll go check the cupboards again.........

the answer is simple, keep the brush in your hand and keep paintin'! [Big Grin] (kinda like the story of the man who tells the doctor: "it hurts when I do this..." doctor says "then don't do that.")

I had a similar thing happened to me earlier this month, but it involved laquer. I was adding some airbrush effects to some motorcycle parts, had a BAD headache for days. couldn't get the smell out of the shop!

I can't function WITHOUT smellin' One Shot!

Awwwwww, CJ don't scare me none - my mother looks like that -

I notice when I don't have beer I have a headache. And it seems Beer and One Shot have a lot in common - they sort of go together, like coffee and paint thinner. My doctor and Mark Neurohr's might be the same guy - I have a renewable prescription for Rolling Rock.

When I was growing up, our house reeked of OneShot. I of course, couldn't smell it because I was used to it but people would come over and say HOW DO YOU STAND THAT SMELL?!

The only really bad thing was the flourescents. God, those things were AWFUL!

Seriously though, four days is a long time - you really ought to get that checked out.

Chris,
Everyone's tolerance level is different. The effects of exposure to paint fumes are cumulative. I don't think that most people take the health risks seriously enough. I know my tolerance level is way lower than it used to be. We used to take headaches as just a part of the job not realizing that something bad was happening. Hopefully, your headache isn’t related to your painting.

I tried to look up the MSDS on 1 Shot but it won’t let me view the PDF file. Probably our firewall. Maybe you’ll have better luck. Here’s the link.

1 Shot MSDS

Hope you feel better soon!

Chris,

You may well be sick. Seems to be a lot of that going around. Stay warm. In any case, you shouldn't be sitting in a cold garage painting if you're sick. Your problem could be a combination of both.

When painting in a closed up area such as you find in wintertime (what is it, 10 degrees-F outside?), its best to keep the air circulating besides when the furnace is running. Use one of
those air cleaners with a filter which purify the air, including paint fumes. Even those small smoke-eaters will work, providing we're not talking about too large an area.

Above all, stay warm. And keep the temperature up in your painting room, especially if its part of the house. Cold paint takes longer to cure & the fumes linger longer too. Try not to paint at night. That's usually when the humidity rises & prolongs drying times.

It might have something to do with paint thinner evaporating. I can't smell it anymore - but when I had my shop, I loved the smell as I walked in each morning, though customers freaked! I used to battle depression a lot back then - and I've read that the effects of paint thinner are responsible for a lot of that. Combined with one or two typical customers in a day and . . .

Anyway everybody seems to want to blame One Shot - I don't think so. Unless you're airbrushing and breathing in the particles and it would take a lot of it to hurt you. There's virtually no lead in it anymore. At Disneyland they're so paranoid about One Shot you wouldn't believe it! And the most worried guys are the ones sanding it down later for repaints. Well, their alternative is to paint with Imron for cryin' out loud - and they wear Devo suits and oxygen outfits to sand in anyway - so where's the beef? geeze!

Looking at the monitor and dealing with crashes, freezes, disconnects, 404 Not Founds, pop-ups, pop-unders, spam, re-booting, dial-up delays, jpgs not opening, give me a pain.

I need a 6 pack of medicine...
