I just installed illustrator 9 on my mac, and I noticed some of the fonts arent showing up. I have version 8 also, and had no such problem.
Any ideas on this illustrator users?

funny you should mention that John, I just loaded 9 instead of 8 on my main design puter & had a font I expected to find show up missing. This reminded me of a similar occurance some time back, so I checked & go down through the alphabet & you may find like i did, another set of fonts starting with a, b, c... all over again.

I found my font down there, so maybe you will too. If so, then next question for the REAL illustrator guru's out there, WHY? & How can I get them all back into one alphabetical grouping

check at www.adobe.com . I'd heard about this problem and there's a fix for it. That's the place i would look first.

found this page at Adobe.com. I don't know yet if John's issue is like mine, but the above link is for a mac issue. (I'm running illustrator on a pc)

First do you use any utility like ATM or Suitcase ? Could be the source of the problem.

Other question : did you sometimes the Adobe font folder from Adobe Illustrator ? Supposing you had place some of your font in AI 8 font folder, you would have to move those one to the AI 9.0 font folder.

Other option : are you sure your font are not corrupted ? Adobe is now very sensible to this kind of problems

Keep us informed

did some more searching in the adobe forums for Illustrator for windows.
I found this information & fixed my font trouble so I am back to one alphebetical list showing up instead of 2.

quote:
Edit your Adobefnt.lst file to specify the problematic font as a Roman font.

1. Use a text editor to open the AdobeFnt.lst file located in the Program Files/Common Files/Adobe/Typspt folder.

2. The Adobefnt.lst file is a text file listing fonts and properties. For each font there is a field called WritingScript. Change the WritingScript entry to "Roman" (most typically, the problematic fonts are listing as EastEuropeanRoman).

3. Close the Adobefnt.lst file and save your changes.

4. Right-click on the Adobefnt.lst file and go to Properties. Set the file to "Read only." Normally this adobefnt.lst file is rewritten when a new font is added to your system or when an older Adobe application that also uses this file is launched.

Setting the file to "Read only" will prevent your changes from being rewritten. You will still be able to install new fonts to your system and launch older Adobe applications without problem.

In the future if you install a large number of new fonts on your computer you may wish to unlock the adobefnt.lst file and relaunch Illustrator so that it can re-build the adobefnt.lst to incorporate your new fonts, then re-edit and re-lock the file.

One of the functions of the Adobefnt.lst file is to allow Illustrator to launch faster (by referencing necessary font information from the file rather than parsing system font information at launch)

If you have large numbers of fonts that are NOT listed in the Adobefnt.lst file, Illustrator 9 may launch slower.

The only problem with this is that when I load new fonts, some of them have the same problem. The easiest way I've found to fix this problem is as follows:

1) Uncheck "read-only" from "Adobefnt.lst" properties

2) Open, then close Illustrator (This allows Illustrator to overwrite the file with all system fonts.)

3) Open "Adobefnt.lst" in WordPad

4) Go to Edit>Replace

5) Enter "EastEuropeanRoman" in the "Find what:" box

6) Enter "Roman" in the "Replace with:" box and click "Replace All"

7) Save and set properties to "read-only"

I still dont have my problem fixed. I tried turning off atm, and adobe type reunion. Neither fixed the problem. I have maybe 30 fonts that arent showing up in the font menu in 9, but show up in 8. Must be something they changed in version 9. If I find anything out, Ill post it here. Hopefully I will....
