I am seriously considering going to acrylic enamels on all or nearly all of my aluminum signs, and maybe acrylic latex on my HDU signs. I am pretty sure that both will outlast the sign enamels that I have been using........
I am looking for a reasonable priced single stage paint that will allow me to hand mix from cans, a full range of coloration. What constitutes a good grade of Acrylic enamel, and what should I be willing to pay?

My favorite is Porter 100% acrylic that I get from Rhino Paint Company. 812-332-2033. Cost varies according to color but averages about $35 a gallon, including shipping.
I also have used Sherwin Williams Super Paint since the store is just a few blocks from me. Average cost is about $25 to $28 a gallon.

Jack, like anything else, the automotive paints have a wide price range. Stay clear of the cheap stuff! As far as acrylic enamels go, Dupont Centari hands down, a little pricy but well worth it.

Raymond, I have already talked to Gary about the waterborne acrylics for HDU and Wood, but I'm needing solvent based for my aluminums, or at least think I do. Is that what you are referring to when you speak of Porter.

i buy my alum local...at a CAMERON-ASHLEY dist. and he stocks 4x10 in most colors....but if you need to paint em some unusual color...i spray A/E from NAPA....also there are some who will tell you not to spray without the hardner....but here in the south..i can and its dry to paint on in 2 hours......but if you want a long lasting(5 years or more, add the hardner).

Check a local automotive paint supplier. DuPont, Sherwin Williams, ICI (Glidden) and a few others supply paint to that industry. A web search or checking with the local paint and body shop may find you a local supplier. You can also get a book from them with the colors for various vehicles which will allow you to pick the ones you want.
I use automotive acrylic enamels extensively on Aluminum. They run about $30-35 a quart around here and $100-120 per gallon.
If you need a couple of coats, be aware of the recoat window. The acrylic enamels I use can be recoated in two hours. If I do not recoat in two hours, I have to wait two days or the fresh coat may lift the previous coat.
These can also be catalyzed. With the catalyst, you can recoat any time you wish. You can also get a flex catalyst that is used for painting the plastic bumpers. This is a good additive to use when painting Redwood, since the paint will flex with the wood. The acrylic enamel will also lock in all the tannin.
