Oftenly, in designing industry, they use Mac design for someone and get pay, and we, the people who help designers dream come don't get some treat. I mean we design for our customer signs and make them, should we charge the customers design sign even we don't get tje job? Just wonder

It is true that most small sign companies do not charge for design, and I think as a whole it gives the client a thought that it has no real value, if you do not charge for your time, you are losing money, start charging! If your doing cheap signs for cheap customers, maybe its the clientelle your attracting, step up to higher end signage, and design, it gets rid of the cheapo money losing clients, you get paid for your time, and is a lot more satisfying, by the way, I work for a design firm that specializes in enviromental signage and graphics, and believe me, there are clients who will pay. The most I'll do for free is to talk to the perspective customer. If he/she wants me to do anything, they have to PAY, and usually "in front"!

i absolutely charge! i was seeing the local "graphic design" house in town bone people for $700 - $1000 for a logo uglier than a bucket of a s sholes...then pretty much hold it hostage...never mind that none of their people know what a vectorized eps file is. i will definitely work with the customer until they are happy with their new image. i usually end up charging $175 but then i give them a cd with every file format i can think of...ya know..coz i don't want to get a phone call everytime they need tshirts, newpaper ads etc asking me to email their logo to soinso. i always end up lettering a vehicle or more, sign or banner etc...so it works out to my benefit by not charging them a ridiculous amount yet charging out something...just enough so you're not losing money if all you do is letter one truck.

Yes, charge for design services. At the very minimum, charge for the hourly labor. (Most graphic design companies charge for the VALUE of the design work, not just for the cost of the labor involved.)
On the other hand, be sure you're actually designing something. Just picking out a font and scaling it to size is not really "designing a logo" in my book. (although for that, i might still charge for a half hour of labor to go through 1000 fonts in order to pick the right font.)

On about 99% of my estimates that is the first line item. Graphic design work and if this helps 1 person I'll be happy, or if you want to help modify to make it better please do and let me know what you changed as I might like it better too!
