Here's the problem...Installed a Belkin USB card in my G3 Mac, as well as the most current drivers. My system profiler/device manager showed the USB card present, and is showing the Optical mouse present as well. The light on the mouse is on, so it's getting power from the USB port, but it's showing that the mouse isn't present in the mouse setup control panel.
Tech support from Logitech (mouse company, not Disney related, but COULD be.) was futile....they have computers answering all the questions, which is kinda ironic being that computers are the problem.

Don,..did you press the little button on the bottom of the mouse holder and on the mouse to make sure the reciever is getting signals from the mouse?
Posted by Don Coplen (Member # 127) on :
Thanks Timi. No, this isn't a wireless. I work too long of hours lately to worry about recharging.
Posted by timi NC (Member # 576) on :
oops!!! worth a try just the same,...I don't know about macs mind you but often on pc's I've had to remove the old mouse drivers and or the mouse to get a new one to work,...
Posted by Don Coplen (Member # 127) on :
Timi...that makes sense, but it's a bit scary. If I remove the old mouse drivers, and the new mouse still isn't detected....how do I get things back again? Won't I be without a way to move the cursor if it fails to work????

Hey Don,
Can you tell us the order of the steps you took after installing the pci-usb card? I.e. 'step 1: installed pci card, step 2: installed drivers, step 3: plugged in usb mouse, step 4: etc...'
Sometimes you just have to un-install drivers and then reboot-and plug in the usb cable and THEN install. In other words, usb can be funny with the order that you do things in.
Anyway, if you can tell us what order you did things in, that may help for troubleshooting.

Oh, by the way,
do you have both mice (old and new) hooked up at the same time?

Posted by Don Coplen (Member # 127) on :
Yes, I have both mice hooked up at the same time...but, I tried removing the old mouse, plus the old mouse control panels, extensions...restarted and still no go.
I installed the USB card, then the drivers for the USB, then the mouse drivers and control panel, and lastly the new mouse.
I hate to spend much time on something like a new mouse, but the added accuracy will help alot in what I'm doing, plus it's a trial baloon before I put some bigger bucks into a CDR drive.
Posted by Shane French (Member # 2098) on :
Don,
If you don't have it figured out yet, try this in the mean time...
Uninstall the mouse, then drivers, then reboot. Then reboot again. Then install the mouse, then install the drivers when (hopefully) prompted. Then shut down, un-hook the old mouse, and reboot.

I've resisted so hard not to chime in on the mac thing but having worked on a mac for a while these things usually didn't happen.
What I see here is a possible hardware conflict with the operating system . Does your operating system support usb Don?
I know win 95 never did fully and wasn't untill win98 SE that usb was at its perfection ( if you call it that)
Have you called the Belking people?
Posted by old paint (Member # 549) on :
don you dont have computer ..you got a mac....if it was a pc...i would have you fixed in a minute......
Posted by Don Coplen (Member # 127) on :
Bob...yes, I have Mac OS 9.2 installed on this machine. Upgraded to that primarily for the USB and Firewire capabilities. Gotta get a CD burner runnin on this thing in the next couple weeks.
What was the Reverend's flyby all about?
I know, Old Paint...if I didn't have a Mac, you'd have me up and running with the USB in minutes. (I'll e-mail you the rest of this paragraph, Joe. lol)
Posted by Don Coplen (Member # 127) on :
bob, the thing that's confusing me is I'm not convinced it's a usb problem. The USB is showing up in my system profiler, as is the new mouse. Plus, once I got the drivers for the usb to load right, the light on the mouse comes on at startup. So, there's communication goin on there.
If you take a look at the system profiler image that I uploaded here, it has the usb info in the pci section near the bottom, but the mouse info is at the top, separate. I would think that the mouse would show up to the right of the usb info, like the monitor shows up to the right of the display card info.
Using what logic I have available after just one cup of coffee, seems that the mouse is disjoined from the usb card that it's plugged into.
No, haven't called tech support yet...the thought of press 1 if you have windows, press 2 if you have mac, press 3 if you're ****ed off and ready to take our mouse back to try another brand....
Posted by Mike Pipes (Member # 1573) on :
Don, have you tried unplugging the USB mouse then simply plug it back in, with the machine still running?
I actually have to do this with my USB mouse on occassion when I boot the laptop. Sometimes the mouse will work, sometimes it won't. If it doesnt, I just unplug it and plug it back in and it's ready to go.
I've found USB to be quirky at best.
That being said, I think it's time to try a different mouse. The USB card is obviously recognizing it and so is Mac OS, so the only reason I can think of why it wouldn't work is simply a faulty mouse - it happens.
I don't think it has anything to do with the other mouse. If there was a conflict, either the old mouse or the USB card wouldn't be working right, and since the USB mouse is lighting up we know the USB card is functional now. Besides that, there shouldn't ever be problems running multiple pointing devices on a computer. I can run my USB mouse, my old PS/2 mouse and my drawing tablet all on this laptop without any problems. Of course two mice and a radiation board makes for a cluttered desk. No clue about your mouse problems, but that reverend thing is making me laugh!
Why did he pick your post? I think he's trying to tell you something Don. Mac=Evil? Posted by old paint (Member # 549) on :
the reverand post....was funny....its just like the new mac tv commercials......"hi i had a pc but....now i got a mac..........and it does everything......"
Posted by Don Coplen (Member # 127) on :
Mike, I'm convinced....gonna pick up another mouse. Wondering if you mean replace the mouse with another brand, or that this particular mouse could be the culprit? I like the fell of this logitech...I think besides the obvious benefits of an optical, that the ergonomics of this particular logitech will likely cut way down on fatigue.
But...at this point....any optical mouse willbe better than one that isn't working right. LOL
Terry and Joe, fill me in on the reverend. Is that some takeoff on a TV commercial or what? I apparently missed something. I seriously doubt that I've watched ten hours of TV since June.

Don, I didn't look that close until Terry pointed it out, but the above quote is post # 1 for REV. Albert. I too, think it is a spoof on the new breed of mac commercials where someone introduces themself & explains how the light went on in their head & they realized that switching to Mac's was their destiny. I checked out the Rev's home page & found a link to his friend Shane French's "Halo Graphics" so maybe not such a huge co-incidence after all.

I use a mac as well, and have for a while. But I have not installed a usb port into one that does not have one. I can tell you, though, that on a mac, you can have as many mice or tablets plugged up as you like and all usually work.... extensions or not. Usually the extensions simply give you access to customizing buttons and such... the mouse itself usually works from the get-go. My guess is a) it is a faulty mouse. or b) (which i lean toward)it is some sort of disconnect with the computer seeing that that thing you have plugged into this new thing is a mouse after all and it needs tweaking a bit somehow.

Man, am I slow. I totally didn't get that until OP's post. I about died when I read Bryan's post (cuz I can barely stomach those commercials) and linked the post to the eRev (a very good friend of mine) in IM last night.
Yeah, I'm the link right above "The #1 Christian Porn Site." Now That's status!
In any event, I really didn't want this to turn into a "See? Macs Shoooooore suck don't they Don?" post. It's a drag to have computer problems no matter what platform you use.
BTW, didn't mean to sound like I was bashing Apple. I had a MAC 12 years ago and I want to get another one but they're too darn expensive!

Hi Don;
Have you tried to rebuild your desktop? Or to zap your PRAM? May be it could help!
Have you other devices plugged in your USB card? If so, may be you need a powered USB hub.
And are you sure that this USB card and the mouse are MacOS 9.2 compatible?
Just some suggestions.
And you could find support and help on some Mac forums. Macpeople are usually very kind Posted by John Deaton III (Member # 925) on :
I've got a powermac G3, running system 8.6 with a pci usb card. I am currently using three slots in the card, one for my hp printer, one for my brother laser printer, and one for my logitech optical mouse. All three work great, and have since installing the card. The logitech mouse had a few glitches when I first installed it, but after downloading fixes from their site, havent had a problem since. I use it every day. I cant understand why yours is doing what its doing don. Could be the usb cable, or the mouse itself. You might give my buddy Sam Sanfillipio a call in pinson alabama. He is a mac guru. Im at home now,and I dont have his number here. You might get it through the letterhead database. Hes helped me out quite a few times with little things. There is no reason why the dang thing shouldnt be working. Scratching me head on this one....

Don, glad you're making progress, and I hope you figure it out soon.. This definitly is not the norm when it comes to Mac.
Brian, The "Expensive" myth is just that, a Myth. you can get a brand spanking new G3 iMac with OS X ( which really is stable, and easy to use) for a mere $799.00 USD. If you want a little more performance choose the G4 Flat Panel display iMac for $1100.00 USD. Not everyone needs a 3,000 powerbook. I know this isn't a Mac Vs. PC debate, and I don't want it to be really, but since I switched from PC's this year to Mac, I've spent more time happy, and productive than ever before. In signmaking, the large drawback is the lack of drivers for a good portion of the equipment that most of us already own. Hopefully we'll see that change, so there is more of an even choice for people. I probably wouldn't have changed to Mac, had they not released the new OS X operating system. It's just that much better in my opinion. Aside from the annoying Apple commercials, I've never been happier, and am slowly converting our offices.

I have to admit I've been eyeballing Macs too, and it's a toss-up between an apple and a PC running Linux with the slick new user interfaces (which ironically look more like a mac now than windows).
The Macs are also priced right IMO, given that a homebrew PC with similar quality components costs just as much if not MORE than what apple has to offer. Apple *is* having some killer deals on their machines right now.
Drat.. I just got another message from Windows Update regarding yet another set of security patches available for Windows.. time to reboot.

Mike, if you choose to go Mac, and want to save some bucks, the G4 Cube can be found on Ebay for less than 1k. Neet machines, robust, and a very unique starting point for a powerful system. They generally were 450 Mhz machines, though there were a few 500 Mhz machines with superdrives (CD-RW, DVD player Combo). The 500's with the superdrive are the real sought after machines, and can be upgraded to 800 mhz. I'm sure you know that 800 mhz on a mac is nothing like 800 mhz on a PC. Since the OS X is Unix based, (a derivitive of Free BSD Unix from what I'm told) you can easily run linux on that as well. heck, I think there is a way to convert a PC to Linux, then run OS X on that. It's getting wild..

Jeff, the cubes bug me for some reason, I don't know what it is about them.
I'll probably get another notebook machine if I do get one, I really like the portability and small footprint.
