I'm attempting to install a USB PCI card into my G3 Mac. (OK....got potential help whittled down already lol).
I'm running OS 9.2. Got the card in the PCI slot, but when my computer didn't see the card, I went online and found a set of apple extensions that are supposed to make the USB card go. The downloaded extentions caused a system 'bomb'on startup.
The most obvious cause is an extention conflict. I'm thinking of putting a space or a ~ before the extension names to make them load in a different order.
Any other mac people here have problems installing a usb card??? and if so, how did you work out the problem?

Don, if you have conflict catcher, it will hunt down the guilty extensions and tell you what they are if that is the problem. I installed a usb card last year in my 8500 which is a g3 now, and had no problems. I am running system 8.6.

Have you rebuilt the PRAM. Press command-option(ALT)-P-R during the startup of the computer until you will hear a beep… (yes, the four fingers are required in a strange combinations). Could solve your problem by rebuilding the PCI list.

Here's a screenshot of my system profiler. I installed the usb card into one of three open pci slots...and it's the only card I've installed. I'm thinking that that slot that second slot that I've marked has gotta be the usb card. But, nothing's happening. Plugged in a usb optical mouse and it isn't lighting up or nothin.....but it sure does look neat on my desk.

Important to note about this software : it supports only USB cards that comply with the Open Host Controller Interface (OHCI) specification and may not work with every USB adapter card. Contact the manufacturer of your USB adapter card if necessary to verify that your card is OHCI-compliant and supported by this software.
Which PCI card did you bought ?

I know this is definitly not along the lines of fixing your existing problem, but this may be a good angle to look at. Is it maybe time for a new system? You will get the USB problem handled, have Firewire ports, OS X, and still be able to run applications in classic ( OS 9.2) mode.
We just purchased the new G4 iMac 800mhz with the 17 inch flat widescreen, and absolutley love it. It immediatly identified the other macs ( G4 Ti Powerbook, and G4 Cube) on the wireless airport network, and automatically configured the HP printers as well. The display is AMAZING, and moves virtually anywhere you could need it to. Very impressive.
Definitly not a bad system for $2,000 USD. If you're minding your pennies, then the G3 iMac sounds like a fantastic deal. $799 from Apple
Just a thought.

Jeff, I think you're on the right track.
Rumors in the air that the G5 is on the horizon...and that's definitely on the shopping list. For now, I'm on the tail end of a huge project...hundreds of hours (roundabouts 500 hours by the time I'm done!) The Palm's Collection has taken over my life for the last month or so.
Hopefully, it will bring in some decent revenues and I'll be able to go out and buy a new computer, etc. But, even if it doesn't, this is something that I'll be proud of and will be my little footprint on the planet when I'm gone.
So, anyways, I need to make do with what I have until this project is done and out the door. I don't have much of any capital to work with, so am hoping to be able to at least burn the first batch from my existing computer and bypass having to farm that out.
By the way, I think I have the USB card problem worked out, and now started a new thread as I'm having difficulties with getting the new optical mouse to show up right.
I wanted an optical mouse anyway, and also figured it would be an inexpensive way to test drive the USB card before sinking a couple hundred bucks into a USB CDR burner.
