and a dentist doesn't clean his own teeth I've been living at my house for just about a year now and this is really bothering me. I really should practice what I preach. For the record, the pic posted below is how we bought the place.
I've come up with some simple designs to replace the existing sign, but none really do it for me. I was hoping for some ideas or suggestions. When I get home this evening, I'll post the designs I came up with so far.

This is just a simplified sketch. But I'm thinking a vertical layout, with an interesting shape. Not entirely sold on the font I chose, but I did it up pretty quick. address panel

I like it Nettie, thanks! I thought of a long narrow panel similar to your design but it was too bottom heavy when I added the address. I may consider the reverse now and put the address on top. BTW hope you don't mind I cut a few inches off the horizontal pipe. Brought the sun out a little more too.

All you photoshop showoffs Here's my latest I tried the street number vertically and it just didn't look right. This still needs some tweaking or I may end up going in a totally different direction. my goal is to have it completed before Cristmas. All great submissions so far. wow ... some great shapes and versions taking place on this thread! Shane ... nice job, I like that shape quite abit!
Checkers, your last one is nice. I also liked the flat topped shape on your first set.
What era, style and colour scheme is the house? That always lends some ideas to the feel of the sign too.
We'll be waiting to see the finished deal! (heehee,.... how's that for alittle pressure to get it done?)

Thanks for all the input gang. All the designs are great and unique. My home is just your basic 60's style brick ranch with no unique features other than the colums along the porch. My better half likes the idea of a flat top because the sign will fit on the post better. Oh well, gotta keep her happy Here's 2 more... I'm not completely happy with it, but she likes the bottom one best. Please feel free to bash away

Your bottom one is by far the best design solution. Not sure about the colors. Don't get me wrong. I think the colors in and of themselves are great but maybe a bit to loud for the subdued surroundings of your home and neighborhood.
Maybe something more in with the natural colors, earth tones. Browns, greens, beiges, etc. even something simple like the green and white earlier or brown, black ground color with light contrasting copy. Hey you could try reflective on the street number to help lost people at night find the light pole.
And btw...what software are you using to create the convex lettering effects? Very realistic.

All of these are great, and yet, I am stuck on the last design too. I agree the earthy colors would work better than red as the predominant color. Seems as though red is too much, possibly? If you went any deep colors, such as green background, or accents, why not try to tie that color into the door of the house or the trim? Or, if that is not a feasible option, then bringing a lush thin evergreen up and around the pole to dress it up? I just feel that looking at the big picture might add some ideas. I was honored to stay at your home - what wonderful hospitality during the Wall-O-Ween weekend! At that time, you and Susan were just putting the finishing touches on interior paint and some drywall. What a gorgeous home with woods all around, and the long style ranch just blends in perfectly with the large yard and the surroundings of trees and nature. You would barely believe it was close to the city, and their city is extremely well-maintained and historical. Really nice area.

I really do appreciate all the input people, thanks again. Well, I've come to realize that color is not one of my strong points and judging by the comments, y'all would agree I'll probably end up muting the colors a little, but the reds tie into the brick that leads up to the front door and on the house itself. I'm still debating on repainting the post. I still think that the oval kinda reminds me of a toilet seat though . I'll post a pic when it's completed. Bob, I used Corel Draw 10 for the vector design and added the effects in PhotoPaint using Eye Candy 3.1. I found it to be easiest to just copy the different layers into PhotoPaint and apply the effects one layer at a time. It's probably not the most eficient way, but I'm teaching myself. Thanks for the nice comments Deb. Since you've been here we've done some more demolition and have yet to complete where we left off. Another color issue - we can't agree on what colors we want to use to paint the dining room. And thanks Nettie, Doug, John and Shane for the inspiration.
