What is the best way to install a sign made of HDU. The size is 3'x5' double sided 15# HDU. It must go between wood posts with brick built up bases. I have not done much with HDU and I am not sure of it's strenghth to wind etc. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Vic's link to the recent post is great but assumes that you are gluing up two panels of HDU to make your double sided sign. You failed to mention what the thickness of the HDU is going to be. Are you gluing two halves together or blasting both sides of the same panel? What is the shape of the sign? We blast a lot of D/F HDU signs on 1 1/2 18# HDU and then design hardware that will support the sign. If you are gluing two seperate panels together then definitely check out the link Vic posted. Give us some details and maybe we can help more. Also I would never use 15 lb HDU for sandblasted sign. If I am doing cut out letters to apply on a substrate then 15# is ok. But for your basic blank I would use 18#. It blasts better and has more strengh. Just my opinion.

Trey, I left you a message on your machine to find out more info about the sign, but I'd also like to address a couple of questions here. It really comes down to personal preference on whether to use 15lb. or 18lb. HDU for sandblasted signs, but when concerned about strength it is always a better idea to use a thicker piece of material than go up in density. When blasting a double sided sign, we recommend using at least 2" thick Precision Board or for a single sided sign use 1 1/2". It also depends on how deep you're blasting. When it comes to windloads, it depends on the size of the sign, thickness, how much material is left after blasting... there are a lot of variables. It's always a good idea, when concerned, to contact your local p.e. Thanks to all that replied. The sign was already made I was just offered to bid on the installation of it. I was only the given size, I think it was 1.5" thick HDU. it is supposed to be mounted between two posts and then bricked up around posts. Thanks again for all your help and for everything I have learned while viewing this site.
