Hello everyone, I'm new to the board. I'm just getting into pinstriping/lettering and need a few pointers. I am using one shot, penetrol and 1 and 00 Mack brushes. I've been using my Jetta as a test bed. Tried the sponge technique on it already. Anyways here are a few questions I have.
How much penetrol should I be using and what exactly am I trying to achieve by making it flow?
Care and feeding of my brushes?
What technique should I be using to hold my brushes? Am I anchoring my wrist? What pace should I be striping at? Am I pulling real quick, backing up to fix mistakes or just creeping along and using my hand and wrist more?
Am I using just the tip of my brush or the whole bottom of it?
What do most of you guys/gals use to mix colors on/in?
I guess I need an overall explanation of the process. I hope I haven't overwhelmed you's with too many questions but if I can cut time on my learning curve I'd be happier. Thanks.

Shane you are echoing question that most people ask. Some of the answers won't come easily or in a easy to understand fashion. Fortunately there is help all around. First, there is a lot of good information provided on the website of Joey Madden. You'll want to read trough it a time or two. Next, There is a good piece in the Step-By-Steps section of this board, look over to your left for the active link), by George Perkins on "Stiping the Big Rigs". He has some info on spongeing technique. Finally, you can subscribe to AutoArt Magazine through this website. Finally, attend Letterhead/Pinhead meets as soon as possible.

Shane- as far as something to mix your paint in and on, you can contact Joanna at lazerlines. She has a product called the Pro Pallet. It has cups for mixing paint and a surface for palleting your brush. This is a shamless plug as I make the Pro Pallet and JoAnna is now a distributor. It works great and well worth the $25. Yes everyone, the price did go up as I have a distributor now. A good number of people on this site have grabbed one and they seem to like them.
You might also get to a live Letterhead or Pinhead meet where you will learn all kinds of techniques. Good Luck!

Hiya Shane. The best thing you can do is to get to a meet. So many questions are answered so easily at a meet. Like the one about penetrol, how much and what are you trying to achieve. I can sit here and try to explain that you add enough to get the proper pull or drag on the brush but that isn't going to help a whole lot. If somebody mixes the paint right in front of your eyes, loads the brush and says "here's they way it should feel" you'll know staight out what they are talking about. Same with holding the brush. Also when you go to a meet, get a number of guys to work with you, no two work the same and you will probaly end up blending styles and techniques together. You might want to go to the Letterville book store and by the Hannukaine book on striping, it's a good one. As far as working off the tip of the brush, that's probably the only thing you will get stripers to agree on I mix and pallette in a 3oz cup.
