i just finished a window sign, painted on the inside of the window with two coats of 1-shot metallic gold. do i need to back this up with clear? its a restaraunt, and they wash the windows every day (they were very clean when i started).
is there some trick to getting the gold to cover in one coat, or is that just one of the "always use two coats" colors? (I prepped the window with Bonami, and rolled on the gold with a 3" white mohair roller -- it started to run if i got it on heavy enough to cover in 1 coat. the gold was straight out of the can -- no thinner.)

I have never had any luck getting gold, or any metallic to cover in one coat, I almost never use it "raw" anyway. I always mix another color into it like imitation gold to give it a more stable base.
I wouldn't clear over the lettering. the enamel should hold up just fine on its on.

thanks Bob -- i didn't want to go back and spend any more time on that project, but i didn't wan't to leave it "unfinished".
(i couldn't add any colors to the gold because it had to match some other work that was already done).

the only gold metallic paint I ever use is HOK striping and lettering paint. Its solid enough to be rolled on and covers quite well, unlike sign enamel. Since its urethane, you can use the catalyst as well but isn't necessary as the glass will give it its gloss, but if you want to back it up with lets say black 1-Shot, I would use its catalyst.

I just expressed my opinions on gold metallics on another post; but since you already used it, try backing with 1-shot imitation gold (enamel, NOT metallic) to get solid coverage. and if the window gets a of abuse and washing, you might want to clear with Commonwealth Bulletin Spar, sold by Rick Glawson and recommended for clearing gold leaf on windows.
