Well, it looks like there's lots of interest in the Letterville Panel Swap 2002/03
Could everyone not turned off by Mike L.'s comments e-mail me your full name and shipping address.
I'm going to set a due date of October 1st to get on the list. I'll bump this up frequently to remind everyone to sign up.
Everyone has said they want to play, but now I'd like some input from you as to what you want to do on these panels.
-Do you want to decide on a basic size? Or make it whatever you're comfortable shipping.
-What about a time frame? I thought that by making it due after Christmas would give everyone lots of time to get it done. I don't want it to turn into a Baby Doll or Canadian banner thing, where without a due date it never seemed to get done! I suppose I'm being selfish making it so far down the road. I've got a lot on my plate right now and would like some time to do this right.
-How about a theme? Do you like Troy's idea of "Letterville...A Community of Craftsmen"?
Let's hear some other ideas.
Here's a couple to get you thinking-
- Greetings from **your part of the world** Make the design reflect your area and sign it with your logo or name.
- Or, just a design that says "Letterville Panel Swap 2002" and a designed by **your logo**
We can narrow the ideas down to a few then maybe have a poll to pick your favourite.
Again, e-mail me at the address below to get on the list and use this post for ideas.
Thanks!

Just a little blurp to counteract the comment that Mike made...
I made a panel for the N Glantz Shiveree one year. I used Celtec, vinyl and Krylon. Of all the people there - Dennis Gerathy loved it and asked if he could have it. I was very flattered. And a brush never touched the panel.
As long as the person making the panel does the best job he can, no one can ask for more than that, can they? I would hate to see what a hand-painted panel by me would look like as I have been out of practice for... wow, guess it's been years now.

you wouldn't want Joe Cheslowski to pick up a brush for you either, but man if he carved you a piece i am sure everyone would be jealous. Its a matter of doing what you do, as best as you can. I cant wait to play, where do i send my panel?
Posted by Terry Whynott (Member # 1622) on :
Patience Ken, patience. E-mail me your name and mailing address. I know I can get it off your signature but I've started a folder in my e-mail that I'm dropping everyone's info into and I don't want it to be my fault that someone gets left out.
Dana, thank you. That is exactly the spirit I'm hoping to come out of this. We will see a great range in the types of panels people will do. I would hope that everyone will create the best darn panel they can. And I would hope that everyone receiving a panel will be happy and most gracious about it.
Only 3 people have actually sent me their info. There were an awful lot more than that saying they wanted to play. So, send it in gang!!
Also, still looking for everyone's thoughts on the above questions. I want this to be a group effort. Not just me making the decisions.

Terry one thought I had was to have you take all the names recieved by October 1st, put them in a hat & pull out pairs. Notify everyone who is their panel buddy, or sister city. Then these pairs can communicate about actual ship date etc. After christmas sounds good to me, but if all is anonymous, some prompt person will wait 6 months for a panel from an unknown source.
Also like the theme idea of the logo & or local flavor theme from the source of the panel. Having Letterhead panel swap 2002 sounds good, but make it 2003 if we swap after christmas.
Photos should be collected & displayed somewhere too.

Ken, if I remember right Joe can sling a brush too (remembering Mikes pinhead 99 meet)
Don't really see a theme and "what it should say" as the same thing ... but don't really care either way. Gonna have fun with it ... that's the point right?

Alright everybody, This is a do-able thing if we all concentrate. Terry's got a Kool idea and this may bring us closer together and foster more friendship and craftmenship.
Here's my take Terry.
1. All paint for a panel is Kool. 2. All vinyl for a panel is Kool. 3. All paint & vinyl for a panel is Kool. 4. Panel size 12x18. 5. A theme is great. Let's test drive the Letterville Panel Swap 2002 to get this " Dis' ding of ours " started. 6. Let's all pull out all the stops and treat ourselves to our best. Design! Design! Design! 7. Terry is da man! 8. I only have two panels in my collection and I want many more. I would be honored to have the work of any of the fine people that populate this board hanging on my wall. 9. I gotta finish the panel I started for Barb Shortreed at the Canton, Mi. meet this past January so I don't look foolish. 10. I gotta stop typing 'cause I'm tired and email Terry. Nuff said!
Joel
Posted by Doug Allan (Member # 2247) on :
I'll vote for 18" x 24", but 12 x 18 is fine too.
I make a Motion to authorize a committee (sp?) to finalize all these details for us 10x faster, in real time, then our special blend of anarchy will be capable of on our own through intermittant posting here.
I'll nominate Terry, Steve da Mayor, & Dana. I think three diverse minds will write up game guidelines we all can enjoy playing by, compile a final list-o-names by whatever date, & lay a theme on us , if any.
Then we can jump on in and create!
Posted by Terry Whynott (Member # 1622) on :
Well, if you want a committee that's fine. But after going through all the replies I've got, here's my new proposal.
-The day after the due date to get on the list, I will notify you of who and where to send your panel to.
-Size, I think can be left up to the individual making the panel. 12"x18" or 18"x24" sounds good to me.
-Letterville Panel Swap 2002 with your name/logo on it. Go nuts, do it up however you want to do it!
-Get them in the mail in the last 2 weeks of November. It seems everyone wants to get rolling on this. Don't do your panel and mail it off two days after getting your name. It would be cool if they started showing up on everyone's doorstep kinda at the same time. And hopefully we'll get ahead of the Christmas rush.
Whadayathink?
I have about 15 people that have actually e-mailed me their info. Lots more have said they want to play but haven't e-mailed me directly. You won't be on the list if you don't e-mail me your address! Posted by Arvil Shep' Shepherd (Member # 2030) on :

My Take, for what its worth:
DO NOT RESTRICT ANYTHING, size, text, medium... nothing. Thats when you get the creativity going. size wize? make it as big as you want but remember you gotta ship this thing. text. I would rather get a panel that doesnt say anything, a pinstripe or an illustration, or maybe just 1 letter with all the jazz. for those that need a theme what you got is great.
Joe if you get me, I would love a 3 color pinstripe, but I know your better with a chisel, no offense, I wouldnt go widdeling something for you. As for organizing.... you started it! you gotta run it.
Posted by Doug Allan (Member # 2247) on :
My only intent on the "committee" comment was due to the 3036 Registered Members, I figured less is more when making a quick decision. So Terry, I completely support your solo decision making process.
I have seen more then a few ideas get batted around on a thread until the inability of hundreds of people to agree on one decision de-rails the whole thing. (a variation on the S.O.T.M. being one such non-decision, or Dave Draper's 50 state banners sewn-into-one)
So you can't beat a committee of one for quick, concise, letterville panel swap 2002 guidelines decision.
What was that deadline date again?

Wow... I'm flattered that my name came up, since sometimes I feel like I'm not that much of a part of this place with not having my shop anymore, or even doing signs stuff right now. Thanks.
Here's my take on the whole thing... PANEL SWAP. Period.
Don't stymie people's creativity by putting any requirements on it. Except maybe to do the best you can in the media you are most comfortable with. And maybe not to go overboard on size, since not only do you have to pay for shipping, but the person getting it has to be able to put it somewhere. (Hmmm... I don't think that came out quite like I meant it to...)
Maybe once you have the person's name, you may want to take into consideration something you know about that person (hobbies, etc) when you design the panel. A person really into gardening might think an old - antique type advertisement sign with the seed company name the same as their last name would be really cool.
Kinda like Morgan Chicken Feed Company...
Or someone who carves could do the person's initial really cool.
Just take your time and do it as well as you would do it for yourself. Definately sign and date it.
I wouldn't wanna delay it too much, but I am also wondering if a shipping date after the Christmas rush would be an idea. I would think receiving a really cool panel at the end of boring January would be a kinda neat. And people can take their time designing and making the panel.
Just a couple ideas.

Terry, Count me in!
I don't care what size of panel, don't care what the theme is either! Whatever everybody agrees too will be fine with me! I'll e-mail you to confirm.

Hi Dana, I would also rather have the big finale near the end of January. I only suggested November because I was getting the impression that everyone wanted to get going on this.
I've asked for everyones thoughts on all aspects of this but most seem to just reply with a "Great idea!" (which is awesome!) But I was also hoping for more of a group effort in working out the details.
I think this time around it'll just be left up to the individual as to what to put on their panel. Sizes as well, up to you.
I would however like to hear more input as far as the due date goes.
I've got about 27 people signed up already. I want to stress again. Please e-mail me your mailing address if you want on the list!
Some people have posted here they want in, but haven't sent me their info. Also, make sure your info is complete.
Keep them coming, I'd love to have 40-50 people joining in!

Terry, can I suggest that you consider yourself nominated by the group to make the final decisions based on the input that has accumulated.
I would also think if & when you make Final decisions, post them as a new topic so we are all clear on where to look to know if there is a theme, if there is a size requirement, & when the ship date is.
(I still think "...swap 2003" ship in January)

My input (woth exactly what I'm charging )
Personally I would rather not know who was getting the panel I make ... and not know who was making my panel. If I'm designing to suit someone else it turns it into too much like work. I feel more creative if let loose to do what comes as it comes to me. (keeping within theme of coarse)
My idea would be to set the completion date ... then by that date send a photo to wherever ... upload all pictures of the participating panels to a website for all to see ... number them ... then draw numbers to see who gets what number panel ... THEN reveal who did which panel AFTER they have been swapped (numbers drawn)
add a sense of mystery (so to speak) and do it to please youself first ... recipient second

if i might add, maybe limit the size of the panel to say 432 square inches and let each head size their panel within the size limitation. such as 12"x36" or 18"x24" and so on.
or 500 square inches, you get the gist, i hope. heehee
this is gonna be fun.

I was thinking all along that a big part of the fun of this was not having a clue what you're going to get until you open the box. But I'll do this however the majority of people would like to do it! (if only you would tell me )
Put your hand down Doug and Mark, let the rest of the class have a turn. Remember kids, participation is 40% of your grade. And I will start picking people at random. Don't look down or pretend you're studying, I know you're trying not to get picked!

Posted by captain ken (Member # 742) on :
I like the random selection of who is getting who's panel,it may be better to just send the adress of the recipient to the sender. So I suppose you would know who was getting your panel but you would not know who was doing one for you. As far as size goes... you are going to be shipping this thing on your own (I assume Terry is not going to pick up and deliver all of these panels) so make it as big as you want, but know that it may cost Joe a few bucks to ship a 3' x 4' carved mahogany sign 4" thick, all the way up to Massachusetts. I would guess shipping will dictate the size most of the time.

Hi Ken,
I've got about 42 or 43 signed up now! A couple others have e-mailed me that they wanted to join in but didn't include their name or address and I haven't heard back from them yet. Others are tentative, I'm going to predict close to 50 will be playing!
I know some of you are getting anxious to get going on this, please bare with me. I'm kinda wishing I didn't set the due date so far ahead but I didn't want anyone to miss out if they were away from the board for awhile.
I'm still trying to decide on the game plan. From the replies I've received, privately and here on the BB, you all seem to be split between my original concept of the draw and Mark M.'s idea of seeing the panels before you get them.
As far as any "theme" goes, it's going to be completely open this time around. Get creative and make whatever you'd like to make. If you need to be lead in a certain direction, I'd say just use "Letterville" as a basis.
I'd still like to encourage anyone to take some pics of their project as they work on it and write up a mini step-by-step. We can use this opportunity to learn from each other. With close to 50 panels being created there's got to be some techniques being used that might be new to someone else. Please consider this when you start your project.
Thanks

Terry, if your having trouble deciding, there's a little button at the bottom of page (post a poll) one question.... "would you want to know who you are making a panel for .... yes/no"
or decide how ever you want (makes no REAL difference to me)
I think everybody wanting to see all the panels is a no brainer ... I'll donate the server space if need be.

Mark,
I don't have a problem posting the pictures and I will set up a page when I receive them all. I (and many others) would just rather see the panels for the first time when they are in our hands. It will all work out the same way. Draw is random. If you don't want to know who you are sending yours to before you make your panel, just tell me.
CJ......I've set a due date for entering, and posted yesterday that I wish I hadn't set it so late, but I can't retract it now. Some people are still deciding and have told me they'll let me know by the due date. Also, a good deal of us are actually busy and need the time to design and produce something. I'm sticking with my end of January finale. There'd be a lot of people not signed up if it was any sooner. Sounds like you should have a panel sitting around your shop all the time anyway!

I think knowing who you are making a panel for will save a lot on shipping.( you ship it to the recieptiant (?sp) and be done with it. Terry, put the names in a hat and contact everyone to let them know who to send it to. It will be an honor to have someone else's panel hanging in my show room. I have a full wall beautiful mural, of a Dolphin, painted by Adrienne, and a pinstriping panel from Tramp Warner. Customers think it is neat that another sign artist would make something for some one else.
Adrienne, that dolphin is getting thin. What am I supposed to feed it. ( that chicken bus wrap is a riot- the marvels of computer programs!)

Whatever ya wanna do, and however ya wanna do it, is just great with me...... Let me know by e-mail where ya want some kinda panel sent, I'll see about making another one........!!
Just curious about a couple of things though..... Why would you think that I should have a panel sitting aroud all the time....?? I very seldom do any paint anymore, and when I do, it's just for fun, or something like this........ So where does that come from....?? :)The last time I even broke out the brushes was when I got some new ones from Lazerlines, and Timi. That was at least 6 months ago. So......Having panels laying around..Hmmmmmmmm!!
It does strike me kinda funny, that folks can go to a meet and do huge murals, paint entire towns, do fantastic panels at panel jams, all in a day or two, but for anyone to get something to happen around here takes forever to even get it going...... I mean like, a YEAR to sign a name on a banner...........and the one in Canada might just be a myth....hehehhe
Hell, Jimmy Norris sat down and did a six color panel for me, in little over an hour........Didn't seem to take a whole bunch out of his life, or day even.
It will take some people till the end of October just to let you know if they're gonna even participate in your project........??? Jeezz.....No wonder some folks are havin a hard time makin a living in this racket, what with havin to make decisions and all......
Something just seems a little strange about this picture.......Dosen't it....?? But it's Kool.......and it's fun, so I think it should be drug out as long as humanly possible.......heheheh!!! And ,It Will be.!!
The panel I did for this did take the better part of a weekend though, and was a family project, so was a bunch of fun.........
Took a standard 12X18 aluminum panel........ Polished out the center to bare metal..... Hand engraved the "L" from AMOL cover, cut kind of a kool oval around it................. Then we put on a background, did some Flames, Pinstriping, and a little leaf, etc.........
Walla..............A Panel !!
Not Brain surgery.........just a panel !!
And the BEST part........we did it as kind of a family project.......FUN !!
Guy came by, named Lewie........Had ta have it.... Sold.....Gone......Adios.....
Just a damn Panel........Not a lifelong career move...!!
Try it ......
Hope you all can see the smileys, and hehehe's, and hahahah's, etc......cause I'm not tryin to say anything mean, or anything that ya'll don't already know.......

My remark about having a panel around all the time was all about you making an unexpected $350. Have one around all the time and who knows how many you might be able to sell. That's all.
The deadline was set at the first of October not the end. So, in a couple weeks I'll let you know where you'll be sending it to. Be patient!!

Naw .....that panel is gone.... Did it once....do something else next time.....besides...the metal in those panels is junk, tooooo hard ta do!!
