Had a request to paint a hockey helmet. I don't do urathanes. Have about every other type of paint/ink known to man in stock but wont work with catylized stuff (not safely set up). I'm asuming whatever would need to be cleared (if with hardener then farmed out) or just F-J it or preclude (never worked with before). Also don't do the auto air stuff. I'm thinking a vinyl ink or plasti-vac might work Any recomendations? or just pass?

Hiya Mark, My old boss used one shot on a regular basis for hockey masks/helmets with no complaints. He just preped & painted as usual. Because of the nature of the sport, I really wouldn't be too concerned about durability. After all, these things are going to take a lot of abuse. Chances are, that when they do get scratched or dinged, nothing you use will be able to hold up. Havin' fun, Checkers

Hi Mark. You might try using the same paint and thinner that you'd use for painting Polycarbonates (Lexan). This should take most knocks and bangs without cracking or chipping off the paint. Lacryl or SignStrip would be my choice.
These helmets are also moulded, and may very well have some of the mould releasing agent imbedded on the surface. As a precaution, I'd pre-clean very thoroughly or possibly even flame treat it BEFORE attempting to paint.

Screenprinting ink will definitely stick, that's how the manufacturers put their logos on 'em.

If there like most plastics ,scuff it with scotchbrite, 1-shot it wait 6-8 hrs and clear it out back with crystal clear krylon . 2-3 med coats and ship it!

Mark. Being from a hockey town & state, also being a hockey dad, I know who you could call if you want an experts advice or if you want to sub your work. He's in Minneapolis: The Maskman(Eric), A.M. Studios. 651-771-8168. I've never used him but he does some incredable work on goalie helmets. My son is not a goalie so he gets vinyl decals for what little he wants on his helmet. They do get beat up! Good Luck. p.s. Let me know what he uses if you call him.

Thanks for the replies, If the guy ever shows (Says he'll come see me ... no show twice ... two months apart) ... then I guess I'll just add to the price the cost of a used one and experiment. It's for the guys kid and he was getting quoted 1200-1500 without even knowing what goes on it (pro's over internet)(ouch)... besides it's nice to get out of the box and make some splats every now and then.
