I have a customer that had a metal shop buile him a sign. The metal shop painted the sheet steel with Sherwin Wms. oil base enamel. Will the vinyl stick to it? I think so, I've used it before, on wood. My main question is, is the paint going to stick to the metal? Assuming that the welding shop did his prep work properly. The customer wants me to assure him that the vinyl will stay on the sign. Just wondering wehat your thoughts would be on this?

Assuming the material was properly primed and painted to the metal surface, your product should adhere. The liability should stop at the paint job.

Just like the body shops will tell you "paint is only as good as the surface its applied to".
Same goes for vinyl.

Thanks for the replys, so fast. My thoughts exactly. I've explained that to the customer, also. I guess I'll find out in years to come. Thanks again for your help

all you can promise is that your vinyl will stick to the paint. if the paint doesn't stick to the metal, then that's your customer's problem to deal with.
(you don't want to let the customer get you into a triangle with the metal shop -- they didn't build the sign for you -- they built it for your customer.)

Can he try the cross-hatch test on the paint? That SHOULD tell you whether the paint was done right...

Tell 'em "It'll stay on there as long as the paint does" and let the other guy warantee the job.
That's some good paint your going on to...so if he did his thing properly you've got no problem whatsoever.
