I opened my mail this morning (on a remote site so I don't download anything to my computer) and find about 15 'Mail Returned' notices.....but it's wierd because most of them had attachments...'unknown.unk' and I didn't recognize most of the people I supposedly sent mail to....
someone have a clue, cuz I sure don't.....
I'd hate to be sending things out to your computers!

that krez virus will do that, I heard...I had a guy get a message from "me" that the virus sent from someone else's computer...It snagged my name from their address book.

I rarely get virus e-mails but lately I am getting about 10 a day. No big deal just hit delete. It sounds like you got infected and the virus is using your address book and perhaps some old addresses you no longer use, my guess anyway.

A, not to fret, it's somebody else that has the klez virus and it's using someone else's address book to send you those emails.

I've been getting them in at my universtiy e-mail address about 3-4 daily. I just delete them.

OK, ran the test, I had 2 of them....
One was removed and one is still there, it said it was 'unremovable'
OK...now what?

Well dear, if ya arent running Outlook and you havent opened the attachments, you aint got the bugger, so just delete the emails and go about your merry way.
YOU probably dont have the klez virus, it's SOMEONE ELSE that does.. the klez virus found YOUR email address on someone else's computer so it's sending YOU email.. and the "returned" emails are part of what the virus does, it's trying to trick you into opening those attachments knowing you'd be wondering what they are since you never sent an email out in the first place. The virus is generating its own FAKE returned email and sending it to you.

Interesting ...the same has been happening here Adreinne...funny no one has mentioned the fact that the only thing any of us has in common is that we all come here.
I would like to hear more out of Mike Pipes on his "no fret" comment.
We have been suspecting it was a virus of some kind ...but we've been blaming it on Prodigy because non of this happened til we switched over to them.
I'm with Adreinne...I'd like to hear some straight talk about what to do. Soon!

No, Mike I Do have it!!! I had two of them....one was 'healed' and removed the other one was 'unremovable' no explaination as to why.....
I'm afraid to open any mail now on my computer, all of it I'm opening and answering from www.mail2web.com
And not all are the same thing, some have different kinds of attachments....like .pif files.

They describe all the variants of the klez virus (there's 5 or 6 versions of it floating aroung) and have tools to remove it from your system as well as a link to an important security update for Windows, IE and Outlook. If you are running IE and it's older than ver 6 (ie: 5 or 5.5), you need to download the security update. It's included with the IE 6 download.
As far as receiving the emails, there's nothing you can do about that. Somebody else has the virus and your name is on their address book, and the virus is taking another name from their address book and putting it in the "From" field, which is why you have no idea who the email is coming from! Just gotta keep your anti-virus software up to date so they're all caught, and stop opening emails from people you dont know. I'm getting these emails too but I know I dont have the virus.. I get probably 200 of these emails a day thanks to the gobs of people out there with my business email in their address books.
PIF files are not files you should be opening from email attachments.. DONT OPEN THEM.. they are Windows executable files that are rarely ever used and as such, people open them figuring they wont hurt their system because they are not an EXE file.
Monte, I dont fret because I dont have the virus, my computer has the latest security updates that are available, I run Outlook but I have the preview pane disabled so the attachments dont get opened automatically, and I have disabled the Visual Basic Script option on my computer (which is only for software developers anyway but it's enabled by default in Windows) which disables the computer's ability to even execute the email worms... the mail worms are all written to specifically exploit the Visual Basic Script option to execute themselves!
