If I have a JPEG file of a car and want to have just the outline of the car, what do I do? I would like to import an outline into Corel Draw and change it there.
Thanks
Skip

If you havn't figured it out for yourself already Skip, the 'auto-trace' utility in Corel Draw is a joke. But the full CorelTrace on the other hand is very good. In fact, the whole trio of Draw, PhotoPaint and Trace are superb and you should install them immediately if you havn't done so yet.

You can do the tracing on the jpeg by launching trace or by importing the jpeg into a Corel page and clicking on the top toobar, Bitmaps/Trace Bitmap. The jpeg shows up on the left screen and the right screen stays blank untill you adjust your settings and hit 'apply'. The fine points of adjusting the settings are too complex to cover in a global response - proper settings will vary widely depending on the original image and the desired results. The good thing is after you hit apply, the results pop up in the right screen pretty fast and if you don't like the results you get, make some changes and apply again. When you're satisfied, save the results. trick - I discovered that rather than save the results as a seperate file and having to re-import them back into the Corel page you were working on, if I simply close Trace it automatically saves the trace results back in the same Corel page I launched it from. If you need more help, after trying these things, repost your specific difficulty and I'll take another stab at it.

because my need is often to just send the outside shape of a thing to the cnc router to be cut, (and im sooo lazy) i found a combination that works for me

*it must be said first that i always get rid of any useless background colour before i save any scaned image or digital pic.
this keeps the inventory of pics tidy and file sizes under control, why save junk thats not nessesary?

so....
with my pic in the draw screen, i hit the + key which gives me an exact copy on top layer.

with the copy pic still selected
adjust the brightness/contrast/intensity to make this pic look like a solid back n white (shows the shape i need usually in black)

send this 'simple shape' to the trace window

after tracing close the window which places the vectorised shape back in draw exactly where i need it

delete the copy pic i changed, leaving me with the original colour picture for referance (digital print/o/h transparancy etc) and the vectorised shape to send to the router
just tweek the nodes if need be.

as always that just took 10 times longer to type up than to actualy do [Smile]

cheers
gail
