I would like to know how to take a still or digital picture and turn it into a cartoon-like picture. I am really hoping there is a software program that will do this because I am no artist. I have tried Photoshop's effects with no luck. Please help. Dana

Hi Dana,
I don't have a definate answer for you but I don't think there is an easy solution. I think in Photoshop, there is a filter called Posterize. What that does is simplifies the colouring of the picture. It turns shaded areas of similar colours into one solid colour. You can adjust it till it looks good to you. The problem after doing that is converting it to cut (I'm assuming that's what you are trying to do) Maybe you could print that posterized picture out then trace those blocks of colour, scan, run through a program like CorelTrace or Adobe Streamline and cut in layers of vinyl.
What I might try is convert the picture to black and white and play with the brightness and contrast settings to eliminate the gray areas and turn the picture into something you can then run through a program like CorelTrace to create a vector file for cutting.
Hope this helps!

Terry is right about the "posterization" feature used on a black and white. This method is known in the trade as: THEACTRICAL Used in Europe a lot,and of course "showcard" work in the the early Movie House days. A "cartoon" however is done in LINE ART with exaggrated features of the object used. That is to say: a person with larger ears, are drawn VERY large ears! Vehicles with wide tires,VERY large tires. So on and so on. The POSTERIZATION can be accomplished via the camera. The CARTOON,via the minds eye.
Hope this helps
P.S. There are several cartoonist in Letterville that might work with you on this project.

There is a program called GOO that allows you to take a photo of someone and distort their features quite a bit. Its pretty cool too. Do a search on it and you may find it.

I don't have a answer... just a hello!

John's right, I think it's called Kai Power Goo. It will bend a face all over the place. Then you'd probably send it to Photoshop to do the posterization afterwards.

Why don't you drink heavily, then try to draw it freehand? This tends to result in cartoon-like renderings. (Ignore me, I'm ranting tonight.)

Mrs.Dana Bowers used to have a Pumkin'Cutting CD that you could take a photo to be cut negative space out to create the likeness. That might work

Xara X is another program that You may want to try out ( they have a trial program to download at www.xara.com) You can scan in a photo, and there is a feature that lets you "trace" the photo and it converts it to vector layers that you can mess with. it is pretty cool and you can get some interesting effects.
