My signshop is in a department with other trades all in the same rather large building known as Technical Services. We have Plumbers, Painters, Carpenters,Woodmachinists,Instruments,Mechanics,Blacksmiths,Boilermakers,Mechanics,Electricians and General Fitters as well as myself does anybody know of a logo or symbol that could be used to tell people all these guys and girls work in the same place or have any polite suggestions on how I could symbolize this sign as we want to do letterheads etc as well some suggestions would be much appreciated as I am at an absolute loss as to what to use if it was one or two trades but this has me beat. Thank you in advance

Hi Ian. Here's a possibility you might consider:
What I'm envisioning is actually a 2 layer sign. The front outer face would be a smokey or bronze plexiglass face , circular in shape with the words "TECH SERVICES" in white or ivory painted on the left side of the circle. On the right hand side would be a open window, big enough to provide a "viewing area". The back layer would also be circular, a bit smaller than the face. The front face would remain stationary, but the back layer would rotate like a clock. On this back layer, the various trades could be painted so that as the circle rotates, each of the various trades would appear in the right hand window, each in turn. All trades would get equal exposure, and perhaps the colours of each trade could alternate. When not in the "viewing window", the dark tinted plexi would hide the other names/occupations.

I threw together an idea on a post-it, scanned it, but now my server is down. I'll add it in later. It's just a handful of various tool icons under a roof to imply various tradesmen all under one roof. Or maybe "DownUnder One Roof" for you mates.

Thanks for the ideas but what has got me beat is they want something that covers all trades but is a single symbol so that it can be used as a letter head as well I amm stumped

iAN i AM NOT AS BRIGHT AS MOST ON HERE BUT WHEN YOU FIRST ASK, i though about a culmination or symbolic tool that all trades would share..maybe a t-square,hammer,pipe wrench etc..to represent all trades against a symbolic background...

Hows about a pair of hands, as in handmade, ok maybe they all use tools and machines but without the 10 digits hanging out of your sleeves you'd be a bit lost, i know i would I'd have to use a straw to drink me tea.

the only thing i can think of is some stylized "working men" of the sort you used to see in WPA murals and Soviet Union stamps -- sort of "workers of the world" marching off to build great works. square jawed, coveralls, carrying toolboxes. (the toolbox is common to all the trades --what is in the box is unique to each trade).

Hey Ian, Ken Henry's idea gave me the thought of maybe a set of cogs which represents industry with the graphics imposed out of the centres. I like the hands idea as well. (but not in between the cogs. he he )

Finally! 4 days now my isp's server has been down. That is the worst I've yet had to deal with. Fortunately no serious business has been interfered with.
Anyway, since I doodled this little idea up on Friday I wanted post it.
I don't know if the anvil is recognizable, but I am pretty sure my attempt at calipers are not. I could picture sparks, sawdust, & various drops or spray of water, oil, or a little One Shot flying around also.

How about a very simple silouette of a toolbox in 3/4 profile?
If you don't show any tools you won't offend any of the trades... just tell them their tools are inside and all tucked in neat.
