I read a thread recently about someone loking for inexpensive boards for a ballfield. I am doing some a-frame signs for a friend. He had the frames but no blanks, for some reason he did'nt want aluminum blanks but of coarse was in a hurry so off to home depot to see if there was anything we could use, we found 4x8 tileboard for under $10. They cut it to our sizes and we left with enough for 5 signs (double sided or 10 single sided). The vinyl stuck real well, I don't know well paint would stick, but if you're painting you're probably not doing a "cheapie" anyway. The info on the board said it is for high moisture areas so I'll guess we'll see how they hold up.

Tile board is basically tempered Masonite with a melamine finish...Abitibi is usually the brand that Home Depot carries. It is designed to use around tub/shower in place of tile. It can be textured to look like tile, or smooth white.
It will work very nicely with vinyl, and if scrubbed with Bon Ami, Lava soap, or Soft Scrub, to give a "tooth" for the paint, will accept 1Shot.
I have even used it to make "dry erase" bulletin and menu boards. (Don't abrade the area to be used for dry erase)

If it's Abitibi, you'll want to paint the backside and edges, if you want the board to last. I know this one from(a BAD)experience!

in this neck o the woods it's called bristol board. It's made for bathroom walls, but the edges will swell and stain if they get wet. It's really cheap stuff for a bathroom, kinda like the stuff you see in old trailers. For temporary signs it works great, especially at about 10 bucks for a 4 X 8. I cut them up and use them for airbrushing pictures (that wont get wet, haha), they do have to be sanded good, the finished side is sort of like clay, hard to get paint to stick, well, ureathane basecoats that is. I would imagine 1-shot would stick good to it though. If you cut it with a skill saw, have the white side down, it chips kinda bad if you dont, also round the corners a little cause it ain't that strong of stuff.
