I usher at Tampa Bay Lightning games. Last night I had a Canadian youth hockey team in my section. They were well behaved and having a good time. The Bolts went up 2-0 on the Flames. Then the Flames came back to tie it. The kids got real excited at the tying goal and were giving it to some Lightning fans that I suspect were giving it to them earlier. One of the kids was giving the one finger salute. I went down and told the adults on the end of the row that if the kid continued shooting birds he would be ejected. An idle threat but trying to keep it from getting out of hand. The adult asked "What is shooting birds?" The person next to them filled them in. My question is what is it called in Canada? By the way the Bolts won 3-2.

I've heard "Flipping the bird" - which is close, but not common. Most people (around Toronto) call it "Giving someone the finger". Another relatively common one is "The one finger salute".
