I had someone send a file yesterday which was supposed to be a digital image. It had a Word document icon and Word tried to open it. I know this is probably a dumb question but I never use Word. Is it supposed to open pics?

Gosh I feel dumb for askin' a dumb question. I'll take "no answer" to mean "no". I wonder why they sent it as a Word document?

Some people give us pics placed in a Word document, the only way I've found to successfully work with them is to turn the file into a print quality pdf with Acrobat Distiller, open the pdf in reader, select the image, right click (Windows) or ctrl click (Mac) and select 'edit image'. This'll open the image in Photoshop from where you can try & turn it into something usable. Good luck.

To answer your question, Word is not traditionally associated to open graphic images. However, if an image were within a document that is registered for Word to open, then yes, Word would launch.
You didn’t mention specific programs so this information may or may not be applicable to your situation.
If the document is open and displays the graphic image, you can do a simple drag and drop from Word into Photoshop. The ability to click on the image in Word and Copy it to the clipboard and Paste it inside your preferred sign program would be another possible option.

okay you could also press the 'print screen' button on your keyboard and paste that image into any app that supports cut/paste - the quality would be about the same, if you want to actually extract the source image to get the best print quality then postscript is the way to go....
