I have been asked to do lettering on top of a dugout at our local field. The size of the dugout is 10 ft. X 42ft. Oh,there is so much one could do with such a space. Of course, the first thing they ask is, "how much?". I can't decide what substrate to use. The top is of metal roofing and has the regular baked on enamel and then they painted with a navy paint. No one seems to know what kind of paint. I worry about painting over it because I am afraid of bubbling and peeling. Then I thought of 3-D letters either of foam board or formed plastic. Also I thought of vinyl letters with a mascot. The cost is going to be high in this area because of the size. Some of you guys & gals do these 3 or 4 thousand dollars signs all the time but not in this area. This is a small town in a depressed area and I have a problem charging these thousand dollars signs which I have to get out of. Would you please give me your input on which media you would use? If you don't mind, throw in a ball park figure(no pun intended)of what you would charge? I figure in vinyl $2000 and painting $1600. at $4 a sq. ft. your 1600 is close i come up with $1680. as for doing viny that large...no way and the $2000 price is to low. consider the amount of materials you will need for a vinyl job that size. at $10 sq. ft for vinyl you come up to $4200.

I'd stay away from vinyl. Gonna get mighty hot on top. You'll end up with cracking and peeling problems as the adhesive bakes in the sun.

When I was quoting a vinyl job on a skylight last year I found out that at least one manufacturer won't warrant either intermediate or high performance vinyl applied to a flat upward facing surface. I'd paint it and recoat it as necessary when it fades in a few years. It's always easier to repaint after the layout is there so you could have an ongoing job. Also easier to touch up if vandals get at it as well. Probably a good reason to stay away from dimensional letters and mascot as well. Parks seem to attract bored kids who love to pick and hack at things. Basebal field dugouts always seem to attract noctural partiers.

Sage advice from the sign folks above. Go with the paint and add some One Shot Hardener for added strength...
