Does anyone have at least 2 computers networked thru a 4 port router with a cable modem and know how to configure them ???

I would suggest that instead of a simple router, you get a linksys 4 port cable/dsl firewall router. This will allow each computer to access the net and they don't all have to be on at the same time. When they are all on, you still have network connectivity and they can all use the net as well.
As far as all the network settings, the dsl setup info is actually stored in the router itself. You access the router setup through a simple web page screen. The trick is that you need to make sure your network settings are setup correct to allow you to see the router. The router will come in the box with the ip adress of 192.168.1.1 You have to make sure that none of the desktops have that ip address assigned to them. I have each of my desktop assigned seperate ip addresses such as 192.168.1.2 and so forth. We have about 20 computer and all of them access the net straight through the linksys router. Your modem plugs into the router and the desktop run to the router.
If you chose to go the simple 4 port router way, your gonna need to use a proxy server. I've never done it that way but it's nothing more than a software program such as "Wingate". That one computer will access the net and each desktop goes through that computer for its net access. Problem is that that machine has to be on in order for the other ones to get net access.
I really suggest the linksys alternative. It runs around $89 and sometimes you can find them for $79 on sale.

I have 3 computers (2 in the shop, 1 at home 100ft. away from shop) The cable modem is attached into the hub as well. It is great to be able to move and share stuff over the network. I had a friend set it up (that's what he does for a living) so i don't know if I would be able to answer any technical questions
I bartered with this guy, so it was win-win situation. he did what he was good at and i printed some yard signs for his business.
