I had a customer email me today for a
$10 sign and he attached a copy of the
font style he wanted me to match. That
never happened when I was painting everything.
Another line under that, "It ain't going
to happen this time either!!"

What is the minimum amount that you will do a letter style match for? I'm talking about
searching your font collection and maybe even
drawing the letters. Come on, how much?

I charge $50 hr. to design. You have a $10 sign??

What is a $10.00 sign? Maybe magic marker on cardboard? Just kidding. Our shop time is $65.00/hr and if we have to search that's what gets added on. We try to stay away from that sort of thing. If the have a True type on disk or a name we may try to exactly match. Otherwise we tell them we will get as close as we can and when they come in to look at the layout most love what we've done and that is that.

If they don't want to pay $100 - $150 for a (real close)match then I would give them something similar. I have tried to match Mac fonts and you could spend hours on editing. Funny how they can come up with font identifications if they try hard enough.

Turning your customers style VIA E-Mail into Artwork for the whole ten dollars!

(One Sign?) or a contract of 10-20-30-40-50-60-70-80-90-100 units or more?

I think I would hang up the phone or tell them of the time worth to convert it....

It's your value on this one.

5-60 minutes still your shop hours worth and anything over is that much more....

I just spend $10.00 worth of of time! typing to this.

There are many other Bulletin Boards where you would get flamed, spammed and gereally abused over a stupid remark like that!

Man...this signs gittin pricey..aint it?

The only place you can waste more time is lookin for clipart.
My new sign software has a nice builtin font viewer...makes it real easy.
I would not charge extra....if the font is right there...otherwise....$55 per hour.

Ten Dollar Sign? Yeah, I've done several in last few days - a couple for friends - 1 or 2 for the 10 bucks in between big jobs - ye - I'll take that gravy...........pays for lunch for me & my 2 girls, anyway.......

Nah, I aint gonna match fonts for $10.

If they want it for $10, they're either gonna send me the font file, send me their own vector artwork (which I wont tweak) or they're gonna get what I give them.

For $10, they can't be too picky.

I'll take the job, it's lunch or a half tank of gas or a porterhouse steak from the grocer. mmmmm... [Smile] I ain't too snotty or "above it all" and my creative and artistic needs are fulfilled on other jobs. [Smile] I can snap that job out on scrap vinyl or even include it within a run for a larger job so it's not like it's using up valuable material, and the time required for it is nil if it is part of a larger run.

Besides that, ya never know if that $10 job is just a test or what other work it could result in. That $10 job might lead to a $10,000 referral.

Whoa guys!!!! I've meet Roy and he's a heck of a nice guy and a real talent. His humour is pretty dry in person and...well we all know how that kinda backfires on the BB sometimes. I understood his post completely. Having met the man it was apparant right off the $10 was a joke. He was just pointing out how looking for specific fonts are a pain in the butt, something we weren't faced with when we painted things. I've had the pleasure of working next to Roy and know where he is coming from with this post. Fifteen years ago , unless the sign was to be a masterpiece you merely rendered it using a piece of charcoal and lettered it. It was close enough and everybody was happy. Now you can spend days looking for a specific font. Notice I said can, I draw the line too, and I'm sure that line is drawn near where Roy draws his.

I understood completely and I was pimping him back. All joking aside, I thought I did my best to give Roy and honest answer as to how we handle this type of thing.

Hey - I hope nobody thought I would try to match fonts on a 10 dollar sign.........I wouldn't. BUT, i will sell them a ten dollar sign......my choice of whatever scrap materials I happen to have laying around that would be appropiate for application - hey - just remember not to discuss SIZE...... 8 1/2" x 11" sounds 'bout right........

I can crank out $10 signs all day. Lets see, 24 signs an hour at $10 each... thats $240 an hour and guaranteed till they're out the door.

By the way, my inkjet printer is pretty fast. [Razz]
