this goes along with the automotive paint and signs.....but wanted to make a couple other points here. seems to run in cycles the work you do...this week and last week ...signs on alum....used up 2 4x10 .040 sheets. along with that they want odd color backgrounds. got a 2x3 A-FRAME and she wanted pink background and doing 2 2x2 with lime green. the pink i went and bought PINK in spray cans. now on new alum. i wipe down with a/e reducer, lightly sand with 150, wipe again with reducer then spray with one light coat then go back over for a 2 coat hi gloss. easier then and cheaper then layin down vinyl. on the 2 2x2 the lime green is not avail able in spray cans. i have a bunch of a/e paint from a body shop(now this stuf is 4-5 yrs old, dont let em tell you paint wont last in a can)and just happen to have some lime green....ill thin with reducer spray it....and be done and letter with black vinyl 2-3 hours after its painted.

Hey OP, this must take some time, right??

Have you kept track of your time, weighed against the time and materials of vinyl ??

I always ask that, some folks don't measure they're time, guess they don't put a value on it.

time is reletive....hehehehe vinyl to apply to large areas just for color...takes more time then paint, and also i would have to buy a roll of lime green....like i would need it again in the next 5 years....no roger...iam faster with paint...and paint will look better(cause iam also good with a spray gun/can)hahahahahahaha and rapid tack dont make the job go any faster...(for painting).......

Hey Joe, lets look at that(faster at paintin).

Lets say the color you needed was right there in your van(in both paint and vinyl).

So lets paint;
1-get the paint, shake a couple minutes(or stir),
now get a strainer(or hey, use an old nylon stalkin yer wife ripped), pour paint in gun,mix in some reducer,hardner,etc.
2-now sand(or somehow etch substrate).
3-now clean substrate.
4-begin sprayin paint,first coat,then let tack-up, second coat/and tack-up, final coat.
5-now go find somethin else to do untill its all dry, like "clean the gun",put da paint away,clean yer mask,etc.

I know from lots of experiance, the above procedure is going to take most profesionals aprox.1/2 to 3/4 of an hour.

Now lets vinyl it;

1-get the roll out,(no need to plot anything)
measure,cut.(just a solid 24"x24" right?)
2-clean substrate(paper towell/Rapid Tac)
wet substrate(Rapid Tac) remove liner,apply,squeegee first piece,apply,squeegee second piece, wipe off.
3-now begin lettering.

Now, once again "from experiance" this procedure would take a profesional aprox. 15 minutes.

Sound right to you Joe ????

I letter a lot of sprint cars. The wings are made of aluminum. Most of the driver/owners don't want to pay an autobody shop the $$$ it cost to etch and paint the aluminum side panels on the wings. The wings I do are mostly 21"x52". I offer the service of laying a piece of (whatever color) vinyl on the side boards. Then I letter right over it. Sorry Roger but I do this dry. Each board has about 20 rivets on them. the moisture doesn't let me pack the vinyl around the rivets.

Hey Rob, if your "makin the job work well" thats what counts.

Someday me or someone else will come up with something for those rivits!!
