Sit down and get all the info you can on material cost (Add 30-40-50 mark up on it )
Make a short running sheet of the time you talk/walk and meet with your customer.
Now it up to you on the labour time! 1-2-3-8-hours? (X your shop rate)
Are you going to deliver/install or is he picking up?
Leave no stone unturned! Ask everything you can !
Them customers can be as slippery as Snakes if you know what I mean.
Also remember that when you post (This is 85 Words) is that straight text?Logo designed or Magic Marker?
I have seen 85 words in a Advertizment but not all of them were the same in Style or Layout.
I will never give an answer when I have someone call me and say there is only 5 words on it!!!!

Stephen, Only one other thing to add: a hole at each corner for mounting to a chainlink fence (about two minutes). Not much design time: just long enough to type it out and prioritize (between 15 and 30 minutes)

I used to use a rule of thumb on menu boards of $22 per square foot plus a kicker for substrate other than white MDO. So 16 square feet plus a $35 bump for aluminum ($22 includes MDO) puts it in the $375 - $400 range for a good looking sign. I would probably go less for a true no-brainer, and more for something really finished. Vic G

I just kinda went through this with some parking signs. I called another sign shop, they quoted me a price, and I doubled it for the trouble of pick up and delivery, and everyone was happy. (the first quote my customer got was $300 for 4, so he was happy when I said $120)

Cut, weed, mask, laydown 85 words for $35 shop cost? A motivated shop owner with a finely tuned Graphtec or Summa might be able to pull it off, but not your average employee in a busy shop. Vic G

Not really. Production labor includes the overhead (rent, utilities, and such). Because competition is pretty fierce for what I call "Bread-n-Butter" jobs, it is important for me to be able to turn these jobs quick - real quick. Some shops may require 2 hours or more to letter a simple 4x8 because of how they are equiped. When we retooled our shop after the flood, a large, easy to use plotter was a must. Because I can use 48" wide rolls of vinyl in a single piece, I can letter 4x8 in less than an hour. This means that if I have to, I can provide a more competitive price without sacrificing my minimum net profit target.
Actually, I just did one for our local housing authority using 3M 7725 vinyl. One color, lots of text. Using my Odyssey plotter and 48" wide vinyl, the entire job was cut in one piece, weeded, masked using our WebberMade, and applied with the help of some RapidTac. The entire job took just under 20 minutes. More time was spent talking to the customer and writing out the invoice than actually making the sign.
Bty the way, a franchise competitor just a couple miles away quoted $145 for the same thing. We got the job because we were able to turn it the same day. I was just lucky to have the 4x4 left-over panel in stock from a previous job.
