Howdy,

Is there anyone out there that is familiar with the "Graphic Sign Arts" Program offered at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology.

Graphic Sign Arts

I am seriously considering this course but I would like a little input from anyone that has taken the course or maybe employed a graduate of the course.

I haven't gone there not hired anyone who attended NAIT. But I have spoken to a couple classes as a guest speaker. The students also got to tour our projects we had on the go at West Edmonton Mall.

I got to know Susan Ward-Cornish who is head of the program.

I also met a former student who attended there and eventually opened her own shop. She spoke at one of the sessions I was at. She was very enthusiastic in her support of the program.

As I understand it, the program is quite good and the course covers all aspects of sign making in one year.

Susan's greatest wish is for students who really get it and want to learn instead of folks who want to just cruise through and waste a year of their lives.

Susan is very approachable and I'm sure would happily give you a personal tour and explanation of the program. I'm sure she would happily give you some references from former students as well.

Generally there is a bigger list of students than spaces available, so don't put off at least putting in your application.

Thanks Dan! I will try and get a hold of Susan tomorrow. I'm in my upper 40's and looking for a career change. I'm sick and tired of building and fixing computers as the money isn't that good and it just isn't "fun". I own a Summa D610 but mostly use it for cutting masks for sandblasing glass. Haven't really tried to make any money with it yet as I know there are a lot of things I need to learn.

I have been using CorelDraw since 1990 and there isn't much I can't do with it. I guess what I'm trying to find out is whether I should try and get a job with a sign company and learn on the fly or take a course and enter the trade that way.

I get a lot of requests for signs but I'm completely lost when it comes to estimating and pricing the stuff. I have picked up a LOT of pointers lurking on the BB though. Guess I just need a kick in the right direction, what ever dirrection that is.
