Hi All, Before I thought I introduce myself I thought I would take the time to tell you that I have been 'lurking' on this board for about a week. I have never seen a more congenial and helpful bunch of people! I am so excited that I found you!
About myself:
I own and operate my own auction business in the great state of Idaho. I'm married and have an 18 yr old son and a 17 yr old daughter, they're great!
Last year I spent well over $2k for painted signs for my business and this year they look like...well, c**p.
I did some research and found out I was capable of making my own signs...there is actually a machine that cuts that sticky vinyl stuff
I ordered my machine and I instantly fell in love!!! Now I want to learn airbrushing and hand lettering! I want to learn all the hand made techniques. Computer art is great but I am really interested in the 'old ways'.
I don't really plan on going into business full-time but to just suppliment my kids college education. If I have to do it I end up hating it.
Well...this is getting rather long and I don't want to bore my new friends...just wanted to say 'HI'

you have arrived in letterville. you came to the right place for everything you wanted to ask about signs but were afraid to ask!
i suggest you attend a "letterhead meet" also, i myself have met a lot of my heroes in the sign biz here and then again at meets.
seek and you shall learn.

Welcome Dee! Sounds like you got hooked on signs. Were you amazed when you saw what can be done with vinyl in the right hands? You can't help but day dream when you read about the old days when you had no computers and graphics. My favorite stories are about the old journeymen. What a life it must have been.
Mark is right you have come to the right place and you MUST make a meet soon. I went to my first in Sept., Pat King's Duck Soup. It was great! You'll find that the Letterheads are even nicer in person. You will learn so much that your head will spin. I'm leaving in the morning to go to Monroe to the Swampland Panel Jam.
Hang in right here and you will soon surprise yourself and graduate from wanna be to gonna be in no time flat.

Hi Dee, you've definately come to the right place. I too get bored with things very easily but this business has many different techniques to conquere. I love it! What is it that you auction? I have a few old newspapers; "The London Illustrated News". No-one seems to know their value, they are from 1881.They have wonderful sketches too.

I'm glad you spoke up, the more the merrier, and the more we learn!
We'd love to have you join our chat family. And the gang is right...get to some meets! You will learn so much at just one, it'll take you weeks to realize what all you have absorbed! It's indescribable and fantastic! I've only attended a couple of meets, so far. Yet, I'm changing that as we speak!
Between the BB, the chat program and real live meets, I've increased my friend account to a number I could never count. You are right, this is the best bunch of folks I've ever stumbled over!

Never say never to going into business. This stuff and all the people you meet can be addicting. Learn all you can and meet as many sign guy and gals as you can. Live Letterhead meet are where you nee to go. Good Luck!

Welcome to our wonderful world. If you really want to have fun, get your hands on some of our trade magazines and look for tapes by Butch Anton "Superfrog". He will teach you a lot.

Dee, some of the things you'll need is to find some of the older books about lettering. There are several of the books that have been re printed by Sign Craft and Signs of the Times magazines that show more than old letter styles, they teach spacing and some composition. The old Speedball Pen books were great too. Get some paper and shocard color and a Grumbacher 9355 and start copying alphabets. Pay attention to the stroke order so you can learn to build letters into words. Speed and gracefulness will come later. Get to where you can close your eyes and imagine yourself making the strokes and soon they become real! Welcome, and we even have a Letterville auction site you might stir up.
