I suppose it's common knowledge that Jerry Seinfeld's dad was a signman in Manhattan. But did anybody know that Muhammed Ali's dad was also a signpainter?

Just another tidbit of useless trivia related to the wide, wide world of signmaking and the people who live there.

Brian,

I hadn't heard either of those stories...that's interesting.

Don Hulsey told me that Jeremy Mayfield (Nascar Driver) was a sign painter before he started his racing career.

Anyone hear of the infamous "Alan Bond" over here in Aus'

Well, he was/is? a wealthy business man, Bondcorp financed the Americas cup challenge back in 1988 when we took it off you guys.

More recently he has spent time in jail for fraud....yadda yadda

WELL.....he was a signwriter!!!!!!

I have heard he used to take the money earned from signs and invest it instead of paying his bills and thats where he got his start, did a lot of real estate deals etc.

As for Jerry Seinfeld................nuff said

That's interesting. Wonder if Ali's dad painted him a butterfly and a bee?

We have enough musical talent here on the board that someday we may be saying, "I know him, met him in ----- at a letterhead meet.

Kind of the opposite with me. I was famous first.........but nobody went to my movies, so I became a sign painter.

On "Seinfeld", look for the "Kal Signs" sign in the background in outdoor shots. It's blue & white. Kal was his father's first name.

This thread got me looking for related stuff on the net. Found this http://johnnybergsigns.tripod.com very interesting story. Also found that Woody Guthrie was a sign painter.
