How tall do you guys make your boat registration numbers. I cant get any one from the state to give me an answer. I was thinking 4 inches tall would be more than enough but I would like to make them smaller like 3 inches for this one job. What do you guys think . Thanks.

Hiya Ryan,
Boat registration numbers are not regulated by the state. It's the U.S. Coast Guard.
Here's the link
US Coast Guard
They state "...Be in plain vertical block characters of not less than 3 inches in height"
Havin' fun,

3 inches, block letters (like Helvitica)but most states are somewhat lax on this, applied thus:
XX #### ST.

Dont forget about the ascenders and descenders in the font, they can make the lettering smaller if you dont account for it.

I dont get too hung up on the block lettering either. As long as it's legible I let it fly but I do use some discretion... ie: no brush script letters.. but Stacattos are good to go.

If a boat is documented there are another set of rules that apply. The numbers are permanently affixed to the inside hull of the boat and there are minimun letters sizes (4")for the name and hailing port. There are also different rules applying to commercial vessels.
