I saw one of the local Window Tint - Sign guys had it posted in BIG, BOLD letters. 12 X 24 magnetic signs, $9 a set. What a deal! I'm thinking of just going there & buying them from him. Cheaper than making them myself, & no labor involved!

It's just another gimmick to get people in the door. I've sold magnets that size for less than that... and made a very good profit too Ya just have to order a hundred or more at a time. Havin' fun, Checkers

It seems the Tint business is almost the same as the Sign business. With signmakers cutting into the body shop and contractors busnesses its no wonder big business are buying plotters and hiring their own designers. Oh well!

Joey, I stopped to try to sell some cut letters to a guy that had bought a window tint franchise. They had that boy hooked up!!! They were combined with a audio store too. When I was telling him about the graphics and letters, I could cut on my machine his jaw hit the floor. I couldn't figure out why until, he opened up another room and showed me the Roland plotter that he was using to cut window tint only. He didn't have a clue on how to do anything other than run the one program, the franchisers provided. He didn't own Corel, PhotoShop or any signmaking package. Guess whose jaw hit the ground next.

Maybe you should sneak up to his window late at night and add a 00.00 after the 9.

Yeah, but I would like to be in his store when the local carpenter comes in and says he would like to order a pair of the $9.00 magnetic signs and the sign guy says "It's $9.00 a set for 100 sets". I'd love to see the look on the carpenters face.
I know personally I can't bring myself to mislead people like that. It looks horrible, like you have to beg, steal, and lie just to get people to talk with you. I would much rather be up front about everything.
Unless this dude really does charge $9.00 for one pair. Then I say we all should buy from him, mark-up, and sit back and let the cash flow!

if i buy magnetic material (glossy white) in 50' rolls it costs me $2.68/foot (24" wide). so a pair of 12" x 24" would cost me $5.36 plus another $1.25 for the vinyl (glossy red intermediate Oracal- i'm figuring 20" wide, 10" high, two pieces) and a quarter for the tape. That's $6.86 in materials. Anybody who can stay in business selling $7 of materials for $9 isn't gonna be in business very long....
or, its called a loss-leader. get them in for the cheap magnets, and then up-sell them on getting all their windows tinted.
personally, i can't imaging trying to build a business with customers who want that kind of low pricing. (and i'm imagining a hundred little trucks driving around with cheap red vinyl on cheap white magnets -- square corners - all spelled out in Helvetica Condensed UltraBold...)

I agree. But it is done all the time. In fact, the local Signs Now is doing just that with banners - 3'x8' = $50.
Ya just gotta love it.
And, I've got to admit, they seem to be pretty busy. They are now offering weekend service. In fact, I saw them lettering a dump truck last Sunday afternoon.
I guess I'll just stick with my high prices and enjoy my Friday afternoons and weekends off. There is a life outside of this business after all.

I have seen a few of those types around my parts too, like the guy who wanted 100 corex 1 color 18x24 screen printed signs and before I could give him a price he asked if I could beat $2.40/sign. I said to go for it.
I also mentioned (to the not so potential customer anymore) that one of the things I learned at the BIG show in FT. Worth was "you can go broke or you can go broke very tired" (so busy being the cheapest guy in town). He laughed and agreed with me. I just a soon go broke. I've talked to a few other sign & print shops about this and they all agree - keep your price and don't fall for the "lowest bid" to get the job.

Just saw a sign outside one of the print shops in my town who have cutters advertising 18x24 yard signs for 6.50. With the wire stake! And they don't screen print, this is vinyl. Whewwww!

Yes, if someone was selling them there would be people who wanted a cheaper one. Of course a cheaper one would be better than not having one at all. LOL

sounds like the guy here in town he just did a 4x8 alum. lite 5 lines of copy and logo installed for 200.00 bucks and he did 3 of them! I wondered how he stays so thin now I know he cant aford food .....lol

Those guys are everywhere - in my 'hood there is a shop that does 1/2 inch MDO 4x8s installed the next day with 5 lines of copy for $150.00
and the ugly things are all over the place!

got em here to....place called the print shop got a 2' x 6' banner out front, on it says $25 BANNERS. and couple other cheap priced signs. see 4x8's on corplast for $100....idiots with computers....should be the name of there shop...

It is pretty pathetic to see these prices but keep emphasizing quality and design and you will stay busy with the type of work you want. Check out the set of mags we just sold for $225 on the portfolio page....

well wayne your over there in the metropolis of chipley.....hahahahahahahahah......all the cheap asses live in pensacola. saw a study that was done and the panhandle of florida the wages here are at 75-80% of the rest of the nation.....what do dat tell ya....and i thought west by god virginia was a poverty area...

Just out of curiosity, I looked up some old paperwork from a larger (100 or more) magnetic sign order and I stand corrected. The price on the job I was thinking of was invoiced out to be about $7.00 per magnet, not, per pair. Checking those numbers, we could have gone as low as $9.30 a pair & still made our usual profit. There were times we would take less profit in order to get a job but screen printing isn't one of them. Printing a hundred of anything can get old & tiring real quick. Havin' fun, Checkers

I was in one of the Signs First shops in our area yesterday to pick up some digital printing they did for us and they gave a customer a price of $30.00 for a set of 12" x 24" mags. My mouth dropped open! I know the manager well so I questioned if it was a loss leader or what? He said that because of competition in the area they have to sell'em for that. When I told him our cheapest mags were $65.00 a set his mouth dropped open, and we sell a lot of mags too. Luckily we're 45 miles away and don't have to compete with the quicky sticky shops in town.
