How much would you charge to just deliver a 4X8?
3 HRS. round trip. SHOP RATES or SOMETHING LESS....or WHAT? Anybody got a "formula"?

Bob,

I charge shop rate, because we are a shop of only 2 people. If I have to go myself or remove Don from a job to deliver a sign then shop rate applies. Whether he is making a sign or driving one to be delivered the clock is ticking.

A 3 hour round trip would also accumulate a per mile charge for gas and wear & tear. If I run into a situation like this I usually call my brother who is a salesman and ask him what the going rate for "a per mile charge" is. Last I checked it was .32 a mile I believe.

I will also state that an " in town or surrounding towns " delivery is NOT charged delivery charges at all, I provide this service because I am in a small town, out of the way. Unless it is an installation, then it becomes part of the install price.

I would charge shop rate also. Why not call a delivery service, and add 20%? We have a few around here that are much cheaper than your typical freight carrier.

We use a delivery service quite often. They will run across town for 12 bucks. I won't. Works great for us.

I have doubts that any of my customers would pay $180 - $200 bucks just for delivery with an added mileage charge on top.

We tell our customers that we don't deliver and offer for them to use the delivery service we use. We make a few bucks and the customers saves a bunch of cash. Ain't America great?
Have a great one!

I've used removalists for larger deliveries in the past. I found their prices to be very reasonable and they are set up to cart large and/or fragile goods.

I have a tv that I need to send to my daughter in Florida. Hey Bruce, will your service do it for
$20?
FedEx wants $130

Send her the $130 for a new TV at Costco w/ VCR

I should have made the point that Bob should look for someone or some service to handle a delivery.
It makes no sense to tie up that much time for a simple delivery, especially at the amount it would need to be to cover shop rates. Heck, if they are willing to pay the costs though, go ahead. Some companies wouldn't even flinch at paying top rates for that.

Doug, you are right about the tv too, better to buy one at that rate except that my daughter gets a 75% discount from FedEx.

I have a few customers that are about that far, that want me to deliver and watch or help install. I charge $25.00 to leave the shop, plus $1.25 per mile(round trip), and shop rate($65.00) while watching the install. If it is open road, you can make fairly decent money this way, and I enjoy driving.
