I wouldnt worry about the books if you can get a deal (the academic version doesnt come with books for example, but is a lot cheaper). Corel was smart enough to include the full manuals on the cd in PDF format.
The only book you'll want (and is not in PDF, bummer) is the clipart book. These can be had directly from Corel for around $35.

I think you can pick up an OEM full version for 100.00 or less on E-bay. I got 9 nearly a year ago for 62.00. I have no problems buying the OEM versions, when Corel, as well as all the other software companys know and allow people to sell them on the side. Its just another marketing level for them. Like Titlest and Titlest X-outs, they are the same product in a different wrap, and advertised to a different market. Think about this one.... How many computers do you see loaded with Corel Draw of any version. Less that 1%, I will bet. Now, think about how many million OEM versions their are in the wings, produced by Corel, knowing where they are headed. People have given me flak about buying the OEM versions of programs before, but I'm not willing to waste money for an instruction booklet with F1 on my keyboard. Just my opinion. Bronzeo

Corel 10 does not come with either a users manual OR a clipart/fonts manual. I paid $345 Canadian for my "upgrade" package when Corle 10 first came out.
If you can get a legit copy for $100 US it is a bargain!
And YES there is once again a learning curve...But if yer not learning you may as well curl up with a beer and die!!!!! LOL
