Below is a link to a bootlog.txt of a machine that has been driving me nuts. Its a laptop onto which has been loaded Win '98, previously running Win '95. After formatting the machine and loading '98 I get a windows protection error which will only allow me to start in safe mode. The suport for the machine is limited to say the least(UMAX - good scanners,crappy laptop support) If anyone can help point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it a great deal, the main problem seems to occur when loading the fonts during startup. System drivers have been dl'ed and installed as per the support site/page Bootlog viewable at: http://www4.tpgi.com.au/users/fisherd/Bootlog.txt All suggestions appreciated, David

No promises (yet), just a thought process.
Once in safe mode, go to Start>>Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>System Information. From there Tools>>System Configuration Utility, click on the Advanced button from the General page. Mark every box that can be marked, reboot the machine. At the menu prompt, load normal or logged. If it boots as it should, go through the above process again but uncheck one item at a time, record what you unchecked, and reboot. Repeat until the systems hangs. Knowing which item causes the machine to not boot properly will help to pinpoint the exact cause. Make the Enable Startup Menu the last item to be unchecked.
At this point, my best guess is Forced Compatibility mode disk access, and its just that, a guess. Let us know how you make out.

sounds like windows 98 didnt load properly. if you just formatted....redo the fdisk and reformat then install windows again.....is this laptop a compaq?

Thanks for the replys gents. Bob, I probably should have mentioned, I have run msconfig and disabled everything including the options under the advanced tab and I still get a Windows Protection Error. Occasionally it comes up with "Windows Protection error on IO, you must restart your computer" but usually just "Windows Protection Error, you must restart your computer" Joe, after the first load of '98 I thought the same as you, just a hiccup in the load. I've loaded it twice since then using one version of '98 and once using '98SE. Its presently loaded with '98SE Your suggestions are appreciated. Bob, do you mean forced compatability mode in the bios or are there options available somewhere deep down in windows? Typical that this should happen on a job for a friend (supposed to be doing it at mates rates)

Sorry for the delay in response. (and I wont really shed any new light on the subject anyway.) The Forced Compatibility mode disk access is under the Advanced tab when you run msconfig.exe. Sorry I wasn’t able to give you anything solid.
I’ve never heard any solid reports that throwing a computer out a window actually repairs a system; but it does wonders to restore ones mental well being!!

Hey David,
I'm Dave, Janette's boyfriend. Win 98 has a built-in utility called System File Checker. It scans for corrupted windows system files and will allow you to repair them from your original (compacted) .cab files on the Windows 98 CD. Click on START, RUN and type sfc [enter] It may be just a corrupted file. Good luck.
