John, In c9, choose a large outline for your copy which would define the contour you want, then use convert outline to object, then apply hairline outline to it, then seperate, pull the parts out that you don't want and you will have a perfect contour, much better than contour has ever worked on its own. It is very fast. In some cases their are ghosts that you will want to find from the original by using view in wireframe.

Hi John,

Jack nailed it with his "Convert Outline to Object" tip. If you have further questions, we illustrate the technique at: http://www.summadirect.com/tips/tip3.html .

If you do a lot of contouring with the Pen Tool, you may want to consider CoCut Pro. It converts outlines to cutable vectors automatically, and can save you a bunch of manual steps. If you're interested, you can download a free demo at http://www.cocut.com .

Regards,
