Gavin, if you know it's out there, please let me know when you find it. I distribute both Sonex and Auralex sound foams. I've never seen or heard of anything like a film that functions in this capacity. What is your application for it if you do find it?

Gavin, another explanation of how it works......SOund waves MUST be dispersed and trapped to be "deadened". I use 6" thick Aurelex in recording studio control rooms. I use 4" strips in the corners of main areas to trap & kill standing soundwaves and anomalies. I'm finding it very hard to understand how a film could function in this capacity. Please prove me wrong. I'd love to have a film alternative. It sure would simplify a lot of applications for me.

Gavin,
I think there is a film used in the automotive industry for deadening the sound in car doors, trunks & such. It was applied to the inside of the metal panel. It looked alot like thick tarpaper. You might try a good automotive supply house?
Good Luck.

Jeff, what you're talking about isn't a film. My son is using it in his current custom car project.

Dynamat.... is the name for the vehicle sound deadener ... my truck is full of it!! It works very well depending on what its used for. You can get it at your local circuit city.

OK first need to know what kinda film yer talkin about..

Is it a film, like a transparent window film?

Or a mat, like overpriced Dynamat or similar mass-damping product?

I'll assume yer talkin about transparent window films in which case I'll say you are in luck.. because I engineered the windows in the Headquarters building of the company that makes that very film. They're headquartered in St Louis, where I used to live and work. While I didnt engineer the film, the film was applied to every piece of glass on the job.. it's also extremely expensive.

Anyway.. the company is called Solutia, a spin-off of Monsanto
www.solutia.com

They're the parent company of CPFFilms, Llumar, FormulaOne, Vista-Films and GilaFilms.

Unfortunately I didnt see any sound deadening films on their site, but I know they made it, I actually had to draw the stuff as it was laminated between the panes of glass. Unless it was just a coating applied at the glass plant and not a seperate film.

Maybe you can talk to someone there about it.. the stuff I dealed with may have just been an experimental product.

damn this is an amazing board of people sometimes.

I've used dynamat by the boat load as well. It's a nifty product. Like Ryan, I more or less coated the inside surfaces of my 82 Corvette with it in hopes of killing the squeeks and rattles associated with these cars. I stepped up to the hoodliner material, which has a heat shield material on it... This dropped interior temps as well, especially in the footwells.

You guys tryin to quiet down your cars should check out viscoelastic sound damping materials like NoiseKiller and B-Quiet..

They can be sprayed in or brushed on, no busted knuckles or sticky fingers from trying to lay in a tar-covered asphalt mat.

Plus it's SO much more effective with less material, saving weight too.

Not to mention you can damp a whole vehicle in MINUTES if yer spraying it on.
