Here's a tough one, esp. for our Prime Minister, what to do with the Afgan refugees. Is he right in taking a firm stand to stem the ever-growing tide of illegal immigrants, or should Australia welcome them, build more processing centres and accommodate all refugees? I am interested in your view. According to our media, John Howard's stand is popular among locals but condemned by the rest of the world.

Quite a dilemma, I would say--maybe us Americans are not qualified to enter ANY discussion on refugees considering our horrible policies & record dealing with Cubans, Mexicans, Central Americans, Africans, and of course our own "in-house" refugees, Native Americans. That said, I feel the humanitarian thing to do would be to take in the Afghani's--they are fleeing a horrible religious holocost on a par with Hitler's persecution of the Jews. Once there, I'm sure you will find a resourceful & hard-working people, ready to contribute to your society if you let them.

but the rest of the world turns a blind eye to what goes on in Afganistan.

Just cause nobody has the b**ls to go in and do anything about it.

I mean you wouldn't want to offend the muslims would you!

On second thought send them to the States...they helped create the mess!

Interesting subject Gray. You already know that this sort of discussion will get fanatics on both sides of the fence at each other's throats. I'm not against political or religious debate, but Letterville is not the place for this topic.

Is there anyone who knows of a forum devoted to this type of topic?

Steve, while I can see your point about a post like this bringing out the worst in people sometimes, I was rather happy to see this post, as it opens my eyes to other goings on in the world. The more we try to see what others are faced with, the more educated we can become.
I've always been interested in other countries' immigration policies & this is something I would not hesitate to discuss with my neighbor in Letterville (maybe over tea, or a beer

)Could even be one of the reasons I choose to live in Letterville

Point taken Steve, but it doesn't seem to apply to US politics which has frequently been canvassed here. I just thought current events from Australia might be of interest here. I'll try to restrict my topics only to sign related issue in future.

You are very right Gray. In the past we tried to allow debates on everything here in Letterville. At the end of the day, our trying to please everyone was a failure.

Again, I think an OT forum is the proper approach. Then you can just clip and move these threads there if necessary.

Simple enough, and Letterville's cleaned up in one step.

Please think about this, Steve, because I WANT to talk about this stuff amongst ourselves, but I DON'T want to see it on the main BB. And I think I speak for many of us on this one.

I think this is bad timing to start rebuking these posts when it has gone on a long time with mostly us Americans doing the arguing and probably annoying our overseas letterheads. I rarely see Aussie, Irish or others post OT, and when he does is told to take elsewhere.

Maybe we need a "backroom" or "letterhead lounge" where we can all shoot the breeze about all non sign related topics.

As far as going to other forums for this I wouldn't want that. Too many familial relationships established here already which is exactly where you want to discuss all topics.

Well, some of you are probably gonna want to shoot me....I agree with Steve for the most part.

As most of you know, I'm a bit of a pitbull when it comes to politics. I love a good debate. After what happened this past Fall, I don't look forward to the prospect of anything like it happening again. Some friendships were ruined during that time, probably beyond repair. The fact is that some just can't get involved without taking it to a personal level.

So, I'm going to take Linus VanPelt's suggestion...."There are three things people shouldn't discuss - Politics, Religion, and the Great Pumpkin."

Besides, I think Steve has better things to do besides refereeing.

Just my two cents.
