I am sitting here listening to some classical piano music. It is lovely music. And yes this is OT....but IDC (I don't care) and I hope you don't either. The music was a gift from my friend Lorraine.
I met Lorraine about a year ago. She is 88 years old, soon to be 89 in 24 days. We just seemed to click immediately. She is in a home. You know the kind. For old people. She is very well aware her life is coming to an end. She gets such a joy out of going to the park and watching the birds and planes fly in the sky. Life is simple and wonderful for her. She has added so much to my life and my childrens. I hope in some small way we have added to hers as well. If you know someone old and lonely..do yourself a favor. Spend some time with them. They will touch your heart, as Lorraine has touched ours.

Truly great friends are hard to find, difficult to leave, and impossible to forget G. Randolf

You are so right Cheryl. And don't we receive so much more from the elderly than we give? Wisdom comes from experience. You are teaching your children a valuable lesson when they observe you giving of yourself to the elderly. I know so many folks my age and older who complain that their children do not spend time with them. Unfortunately these are the same people who did not have time for their older friends and relatives when they were raising their children. Seems they grow up to do as we do and not what we say. You are a wonderful excample to yours, keep it up.

My grandfather is getting up there and his health is failing miserably. I have always respected my pap and enjoyed being around him. Several days a week, I go grab my lunch and head over there. Even when I'm extremely busy, I manage at least one lunch a week. The only times I've missed in the last few years are when I am deathly sick (thinking I have allergies) and refuse to go near him as his health is already poor, he doesn't need me bringing in new germs (if it isn't allergies).

Friday evening I stopped in, grandma was at the neighbors. I spent almost 2 hours there alone, talking with Pap, just the 2 of us. I must say it was one of the best times I've had this year. I love his advice, his stories, and just his plain old down-to-earth thinking.

At first when I saw your post you had me worried your friend Lorraine had taken an exit, glad that wasn't the case. I know you speak of her very highly, and yes it's good to communicate with our older folks, sometimes people think they will never get old, but ahh life can change that, we all know. If I was you I would video her and carry a conversation with her as you do it. Let her know what your doing, she would probably get a kick out of it.
A good example of helping out older people is Jay Allen here this brother of the brush went out of his way to get Bob Harper, a sign legend to a major Letterhead Meet. But any person who goes the extra mile like that, has a heart of gold. He will always be treasured and I know Bob will know that, just as your friend Lorraine knows your a good and dear friend to her. Not to butter the left side of your toast, you're also a great friend to know, I'm also glad to have had the pleasure to have met you, so Cheryl, be cool and say hello to Lorraine for me, I had a sister name Lorraine...Cisco

I enjoy learning from those who have been around a long time. They know things most people do not know to day. Thanks for the post. I miss my Grandfather (91) and Grandmother (92).

Cheryl,

Your post is very heart warming. My best friend is 84 and we enjoy as much time together as possible. We talk on the phone every Tuesday afternoon, no matter how busy things are in the shop. We go out to lunch at least every second Thursday of the month.(that's when his wife goes to tea with her friends and we sneek off to a local bar for lunch). Right now I am headed to the one hour photo place to pick up my pictures from the Milwaukee Panel Jam so I can show them to him. He lettered signs for 60 years before he retired and although I tried to get him to go to Milwaukee, he said he would settle for pictures and stories.

This guy is not only a sign mentor to me, but my best friend. We discuss all kinds of things. He warned me before the presidential election to put extra money away for a slow spell. From his past experiences, he said the economy always slows down after a major election. Boy was he right.

We can learn so much from our elderly friends, we really should listen, and take the time to enjoy their stories and advice.

Thanks Cheryl for sharing your friend with us, she sounds like a wonderful person.
