Hi everybody. I'm new here and new to the business and this board is very special. I need some suggestions on weeding tiny letters. I was going to say "tiny, little letters" but I guess that's redundant.

Hey, Roger Bailey, it's so nice to see the face with the name. Thanks for the free samples and I want you to know that Rapid Tac did pretty much saved my butt this week. My partner's in the hospital and I've been trying to wing it alone which is tough considering that I've only been working in the sign business for three months.

Oh God, talk about getting off the subject! Sorry:-) Anyway, ny weeding suggestions would help. Thank you everybody for being here!

Sharon, cut your vinyl with a weed border, then apply without weeding, then weed. The letters stay down this way.

Yes to what John said! Also, put your vinyl in the freezer for a couple of hours and the vinyl will "creep" away from the letters a little.

Or cut with no weed border, pick the centres out of letters like O & P etc, then put app tape over the line of lettering you require and pick it up straight off the vinyl.
Works for me,
David

Dave's method is the one that's the least amount of work. We do this regularly with 1/8" and 1/16" copy.

Thank you all for your quick replies. This is so great to have people who are "right here" for everybody and I am blessing everyone of you. I feel better already!
Now, would anybody like to tell me how to cut alumalite? Don't laugh, I'm dangerous with sharp objects. LOL! Do I take it to the aluminum shop down the road and are they able to use the drop shear or should I take it to my contractor buddy and he can saw it?
Thanks again and prayer would be appreciated until my partner gets back to work.

Welcome to Letterville Sharon. There is a benefit to learning to weed small letters. If all else fails, we could all get jobs in a pepper factory picking the fly poop outta the pepper.

Cut Alumalite with a carbide tipped radial saw. Cuts very easily.

I gotta ask, what are you and Pierre doing designing layouts with that small of copy? I was under the impression that we were making stuff that people could read.

Tongue in cheek way of saying that alot of that small lettering stuff can be taken care of easiest in the design phase, rather than the cutting and weeding phase of a job.

Sharon, for small weeding i have found that weeding from top to bottom works better than right to left. As far as cutting Alumilite, i generally use a table saw. ALWAYS!! Wear eye protection when cutting this stuff. Goggles if possible. Small bits of sharp metal fly everywhere when cutting.

Don, we produce a lot of CRA on 8 1/2x11" 2mm sintra for label and ad repro. Most of our customers of that sort require the actual CRA and not a disc, ergo..........tiny copy, sometimes.

How bout' a little bit of "speed weeding". Before sending to cutter convert "text to graphics". Then select "round corners" and with a tiny-teenie setting you will be able to weed easier and faster. Happy Weeding!

Hi Sharon and welcome. When weeding small letters I use a weed border and after cutting I the pull the centres out. next I pick the lot up with application tape ( weed border and all). Next step I turn the application paper upside down and adhere the appo tape to table with masking tape around 4 sides. then with tweezers it is easy to pull the background away. Good Luck!!
