okay, here's something i've never done before, but the sales manager at a dealership i visited in a small nearby town in missouri wants a bid. so, okay, everybody, what's the going rate these days? (naturally a guy in rural missouri won't be paying premium west coast prices so please take this into account when responding. he said somewhere in the neighborhood of 150 cars, and this is a fairly nice chrysler dealership.) do most of you simply lay one or two colors down without a white prime undercoat? (the guy he has now does this... they're simple, non-splashy single messages wih no white underneath... no crazy fonts or anything.) do most dealerships prefer the big flourescent numbers and wild colors? and what kind of paints/ brushes do most of you recommend? anybody have pics of similar jobs they've done posted that i could check out? ..and THANKS to everyone who has contributed to my previous posts; you're all a great bunch of people. preston mccall, the big-guns guy in my neighborhood, has been espeicially complimentary and encouraging. by the way, my stuff can be seen at: www.johnhayesillustration.com ...scroll down and click on WINDOWSPLASH. thanks again! -john hayes

John; I get $8.00 per windshield/20 car minimum to get me out in the heat where the sun will bounce off those windshields,fry your face,and drain your body!They get (3) colors,white being one,chrome Yellow,Peacock Blue,Magenta,emeral Green or any combination of light colors that are suitable. NO flourescents for that price.They might tell you 150 cars,but......... I am not sure of they difference between rural Missouri,and Rural Alabama but the price to BUY the vehicles seem to be the same

Hi, I had the same opportunity last summer to do car windshields, and I got a lot of advice from here.... I ended up using One Shot, a flat lettering brush and used a small cart with wheels to pull around with me. I learned a lot from that one time (so far ) experience. Keep a drop cloth of some kind with you to cover the car hood while you are painting, so'd not to make any messes. Keep a rag handy in an apron Keep track of all the cars you do...I learned the hard way that as you paint, they move cars around.... (I ended up estimating to MY favor on that one) keep it VERY simple, believe me...fancy gets tedious after 20, 30......... One Shot flows very nicely on the glass...so it was'nt difficult. Wear a BIG hat! Drink LOTS of fluids! Be organized! Have fun! A

"Poster Color" by One-Shot (oil-based) dries quick and covers well enough right out of the can. Usually I do 2-color, but sometimes 3 :red,yellow,white. Using a "TV tray" with a cake pan at a tilt for "brush baths" on those hot days I charge $8ea with a 20 car min. Ask your contact to have someone ahead of you or beforehand with a post-it pad to match proper vehicle and copy. Quick is word here: no layouts,inlines on fatletters,relief shadows,swooshes,starbursts,casual,script, plug-letters, let it all fly. By the way if you wear a belt, take it off (buckles scratch !), have fun.

Hi, I haven't done windshields in a year or so, but I get $7. each up here near Ottawa, Canada. The secret is to be quick. I give the salesmen at the dealership a pack of square sticky notes a few days before. They are to write the message for each car and stick it under the windshield wiper on the pass. side of the car. That way you can collect the papers as you letter and count them at the end of the day. Then you know how many you've done. I usually use white 1-shot plus one other color. I have a box about 12" square with 1.5" sides on it. It has rubber feet on it so it doesn't scratch the hood of the car. I carry 3 colors plus white and alternate the highlite color I use.
