The operative phrase in that story is "it will end up in the courts." So competing squads of bottom-feeding pond scum lawyers will make a s***load of money, whether or not these things end up being taxable or not.

The reason why I find it humorous is because of a scifi short-story I read as a kid - "The Man Who Owned the Moon". The writer used the same reasoning for the main character. The book was written in 1952 by Robert A. Heinlen.

Even as a 10 year old kid, I saw the plot as totally implausable, yet here we go! Only in California! Hehehehe
