Hi Jon, Everything looks fine except your[IMG]'s. try using lower case and a backslash on the ending one. Like this:

Gday Jon, Nychrome wire from Dick Smith etc. works well in these things too. Reminds me I must see if the screen printing shop I lent my home made hotwire to is still in existence and if so GET IT BACK! Have you got any type of control to vary the current apart from 6v/12v setting on the charger? David

I guess a battery charger would work for a power source in a pinch. I prefer varible transformers myself. (Also known as a variac) Here's a photo of one of the models I have... You just dial up the amperage to the proper level for the length or thickness of the wire you are using. I have a 10 amp that powers my cutting table and I have one for a slab cutter and hand tools. I've run 10 ft. wires off these things and never had one past 40%. These babies aren't cheap though. They run from $250 to $350. A lot more than a battery charger but if you're serious about cutting foam, this is the way to go. The ones I use are made by Staco Energy of Dayton OH. I've been sculpting foam for twelve years and I swear by these things. The one powering my cutting table is 8 years old and I've abused the daylights out of it. I use nychome wire on the table but you can get away with aircraft safety wire if you have to. As for the hand tools, I use what I call paddles for lack of a better word. I use thick nychrome wire bolted to wood paddles and bend them into shapes so I can use them like clay sculpting tools. You can bend them into any shape you want and they hold their form while heated. I finish off the detail with a dremel. Believe it of not, these vultures I made for the zoo are actually made out of EPS foam... You can make some very detailed items out of foam. Happy cutting!
cool jon, i remember the faces of ppl at the national meeting in hervey bay when devo made up a hot wire to cut foam.... oooh ahhhh how do you do that? it was great
we mostly use the router to cut foam letters but i like to carve foam and the tools i've collected need a shed all of their own nowdays
my hotwire used puter bits n pieces for its go juice... ive allways got them lying around
and i agree with bloke, nicad from dickies is the cheapest/best way to go

You can also use a 1000 watt flood light, and stainless steel fishing leader,my dad once wired up an old projector to a hot wire LOL. I used one like that for years before I found that router with a vacuum was better for your lungs and smoother and straighter on the turns than a hot wire. Bill PS: Nice Vultures, I may try that on seagulls! maybe they will stay clear of my Mercury with a few vultures sitting around LOL.
