Got a request yesterday from a bulk plant to paint there name on one tank and a Sunoco logo on the other...the name would be approx. 11 feet high by 30 feet wide and the logo a bit smaller...have never done a project like this before and only have an idea as to how it would be done...
Any traveling brushes want to come to PA for a couple ?? (days) and tackle this??

Thanks

Dave

Don Husley out of KY.does that kind of work but would probably want me to help.I am doing several large walls at this moment. You sure 11ft letters can be squeezed into 30ft of space??? or do you mean you have 30'max length for company name to fit into?I guess this leaves out all those vinyl(sit in the air conditioned shop) out of this one huh?

The lady on the phone said that the old logos, were aprrox. 11' x 30'. So, i would say that is the overall size of the logo, and they start at aboout 20' off the ground...but you are right Pat 11 foot letters was an overstatment on their part..I just got the layout faxed over and after laying it out it appears that a five foot letter would be more like it...might be doable (is that a word...doh)in vinyl...what do ya think???

vinyl...hahahahahahahah.....no 1 that old tank has probably permeated the metal with whats in the tank....and the surface of the tank is probably got 37 coats of peeled paint on it.....and do you really want to attempt to hang vinyl that big....either make a pounce pattern, or do the layout squares from a picture then just blow it up on the wall..and you surely can handle a 9" paint roller....with letters that big...its gona be mostly roller work.....si is headin up to new york...he could come down and instruct you in this job...i was gona come home(washington pa.) for the meet..and am still planing do get there this summer....

By the time I would get done trying to do it in vinyl I wouldn't have any hair at all left not to mention little ace would probably be stuck up there with it..We figured we would have to do a pattern or grid layout and roll it...so that gets us to the next question...What do you charge for something like this?? How long should you figure on it taking?? Hell Joe if your coming up here give me a price and you can take a working vacation.

Do your layout on the computer to scale ... I use 10th cause we work in metrics here but you would be best to do at inch to the foot. Add horizontal and vertical centre lines to your drawing.

Trace a pattern on your plotter with a pen and pounce paper. You can even trace some full size curves for "s" and "O" etc and cut out of cardboard (just speeds up the marking up)

When you draft it on the tank start in the middle and work to each end ... this minimises errors in your scale. There sould be a seam in the tank to give you a horizontal reference, if not use a spirit level or a plumb line to start ... you can't ping chalk lines around a curve

20ft up? Not high but out of ladder and plank reach ... I would use a mobile platform as you are going to have to move quite often because of the tank curve.

Cost? I work on a square foot price plus materials, platform hire, preperation time etc. If you don't have a standard price for billboards work on what you get for a regular 8 x 4 (about $10/sq ft?). Don't be afraid to add a percentage to cover yourself.

I use a 3" foam roller and an icecream tray

Best of luck !

id go at it with a sq. ft. price....but make that at $7 and see if they will pay for the scaffold, bucket truck, or man lift this way if it takes you a couple more days(rain, tornadoes or drizzle) then you plan...they pay more for rental...wont come outa your pocket......and at $7 s.f. your real competitive....11' x 30' = 330 s.f. x $7 = $2310.....and if you let them pay for eqiupment...you paint cost will leave you $2000....and price logo at $10 because of its "art work"........if they baulk at this....and they say they know some one will do it cheaper.....i woulnt go any less the $5..on the letterin and $7 on the logo....iam not much of climber anymore...good man lift or well built scafold ill try...but iam done with hangin on a 20' ladder and tryin to paint.
