After all the favorite movie and music posts, I was curious to see what everyone considers the best advice they have recieved thus far in life, work, etc.?

Mine was:

I suppose this qualifies...
Without hesitation, the single most useful thing I've ever been told/shown/learnt, is how to tie a truckies hitch.
With one of these knots and some basic ropecraft you can tie anything to anything and it will NOT move.
Enjoy,
David

Oh... you need a quote.

Not long ago I was stressing about my son not eating. (a toddler thing) My mom told me, "Didn't you know you ate every other day yourself when you were young?"

No, I didn't know that. It was the best statement I heard in a long time and allowed me to let go of a situation I didn't have control over anyway.

I can't remember anything more profound at this point.

This is a beautiful thread...Michael, thank you!

The best advice I've ever gotten, was to look for beauty.

Joe, you ain't all that perty but yer heart's sure in the right place!

David, yer honest as the day is long, but it's gonna get you into trouble one day! Hahaha!

Donna, wouldn't it be kewl to know some of those things ahead of time? hehehe.

Jon, how true! Sue sure is lucky!

Si, you crusty old pervert...you steal my heart all the time with your wisdom.

Best advice for me was not in the form of a slogan, but concepts.

My mother tried to teach me the balance between "Pleasure and Responsibility"

Understanding "Gratitude"

Finding "Maturity" doesn't mean not being silly, but measuring how much of other peoples loads I can help with and still carry my own.

Best advice I ever had: 'Read the Bible, examine it's claims, prove it for yourself and apply to your life'. Oops, that was a religious comment, but then, advice from God has to be better than the vain philosophies of men.
The advice has blessed and served me well for over 20 years.

In raising kids...the best advice was from my Mom. She told me sometimes you 'just have to ignore' certain things kids say and do. If you make a big deal out of every tantrum or outburst...they will continue doing them for attention. If you ignore them, it is no longer effective for them.
In business.......another signpainter told me to give up on ever becoming a signpainter, women don't have jobs like that, and there is no place for women as signmakers. When someone tells me I can't do something, I usually try to prove them wrong.

Here's what I done learnt:

-- "Be Nice."

-- "The best thing you can do for your children is love their mother"

-- "Support your child's dreams" (In high school, one of the requirements was to take a "career related" class. I told them I was gonna be an artist and they said that being an artist wasn't a career. They didn't want to let me take the class. My parents had to go to the school board to get me into the art class I wanted to take, and they did it. They had faith in what I was to become down the road and they knew I would be successful at it. That was 23 years ago.)

--"Imagination is more important than knowledge" (A guy at a party turned his nose up to me and snickered when I told him I was an artist after he told me he was a doctor. That pissed me off so I told him, "the difference between me and you is, I can learn to do what you do, you could never learn to do what I do.")

I once asked a very wise boss of mine (back when I was 19), why so many employees did not want to learn more facets of the business. When the boss would offer, they'd shy away from learning anymore than they had to. He said something that has stuck with me until this day, "With knowledge comes responsibility", meaning most people want to be responsible for as little as possible; kind of the opposite of "ignorance is bliss". Another wise man (my dad), told me, "if you're a ditch digger, be the best damn ditch digger you can be", in otherwords, all work is noble when done well.

You should see their jaws drop when they mention the word can't, and I sternly tell 'em, "We don't use that kind of language in here!"

In answer to the single, smart alec reply I got to that statement, they are allowed to say whatever they please if they cut their finger off though, although, I would not recommend creating that scenario to test it.

When I was 19, traveling cross country with almost nothing (my car broke down for good in Dallas), no job, no place to live, almost broke. I got a job in a run down resturant washing dishes. On the bathroom wall someone wrote "lifes a bitch", under that someone else wrote "lifes what you make it". Those quotes allways stuck in my mind.

Another one I like is "do it right the first time, how ya gonna find the time to do it over again?"

Probably the best sign-related advice was from an old-timer who said "never fall in love with an individual letter". What he implied, but didn't say, was work on layout, because a good layout will cover a multitude of sins in less-than-perfect lettering. We've all seen signs with "perfect" lettering and weak layout, and the perfect lettering doesn't make up for poor layout.
On non-sign related advice-- remember your manners (remember those?) manners is the "vaseline" of social intercourse. Too bad there seems to be more "sandpaper" than the other these days.

if it ain't broke dont fix it!

You don't always get what you pay for,
But you always pay for what you get.

Cheat me one time, shame on you,
cheat me twice, shame on me.

Our Time in this world is like fine wine,
It needs to be savored.

I got more, but thems, muh main ones, LOL

Hi!
From my dad:
If you don't know what something means, look it up in the dictionary.
If you're not going to do something right, don't do it at all.
From my father-in-law: The more you stir s**t, the more it stinks.
From my mom:
Don't spill your guts to everybody! (but I always do)
You catch more flies with sugar than you do with vinegar.
From my Mam: Whenever God closes a door, he opens a window.
From a friend: If you ain't yourself, you ain't s**t!
From my ex: It ain't easy bein' easy!
That's it for me! Sorry about all the !@#!!
Love- JILL
