Hello all,

I'm thinking about taking holidays sometime in the next 6 months or so, but I'm undecided on where to go. I've never been on a big trip anywhere so I'm planning on taking a month off to go somewhere and just see where I get to once I get there.

It would be just me travelling so I have all the freedom to do what I want (within money restrictions). I'll probably be looking into Hostels and things to cut my costs down.

Here's where you come in....
Where have you've been that you loved and would suggest I see it or where do you live that you think is so great that I should come and see it?

Thanks everyone in advance for your suggestions.....
Steve

Well if I had a whole month to travel around I imagine I would take a road trip around the western half of the continent and visit as many of the many friendly people I have met here at Letterville. Locals always then can tell you of the "best" places to visit (ie: museums, parks, restaurants etc...) in each of the areas that you have traveled to.

Steve...If you are pplanneing on travelling this summer/fall then Barbados is a great place to visit, not the cheapest place but in the summer/fall there are some great bargains to be had. If you are travelling alone just hop on a plane and fly down. Head for the St.Lawrence Gap area and start walking around. There are loads of small efficiency apartments available and you can get them pretty cheap in the off season. English is the language and the cost of living is about the same as Canada.

If you are travelling in the winter, the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico is VERY affordable. Shirl and I are going there for the 4th year this coming January. We spend less than $4000 Canadian for the two of us to fly down, stay in a beachfront condo with a pool, and have all the spending money we need. For one person, the cost would be about $2500, since the $750 U.S. cost of the condo is the same for one, two or 6 people. THAT is a pretty affordable month long vacation!

Anywhere in the U.S. is OK but with the exchange on the dollar it becomes quite expensive over the course of a month.

Kona Hawaii is beautiful. But when I had a month just to go......we drove all along the California and Oregon coast..Tahoe..Sacramento...wherever you land is good. I like spontaneous vacations where not much is planned. I fell in love with Ventura and Sasalito(sp)

Hi Steve:

My last few holidays have taken us to The Bahamas, Grand Cayman, Cabo San Lucas ... and most recently, Vancouver BC. Hands down, VBC was the best time we've had. Hence, Amy and I have decided to honeymoon in Vancouver and Victoria ... later this year.

I know it's pretty close to home for you (us too), but BC is a real gem.

IMHO,

Jim

I love BC as well, I grew up in Vancouver as a kid.

I had been thinking about someplace far off like Turkey, Australia or India, BUT doing a road trip through the States and Canada sounds quite inviting as well.

There are so many choices and I'd like to do them all.

Last year we did 3 weeks in Sweden and what a delight! However, it does get expensive as the taxes on everything is quite high.
We rented "stugors" - cottages - by the week. You can easily find a comfortable house for about 400 US$/week. That's alot cheaper than any hotels. they also have many hostels, one even on a sailing boat! You can literally go anywhere in that country. If you like to bike or hike, that's the place to go - there are marked trails absolutely everywhere. And nearly everyone speaks English and they are a delighful people. I found the history to be particularly interesting, as the US is quite young compared to Europe.
If you need any advice on lodgings, travelling, etc., give me a holler. I planned our entire trip by myself using the internet.
Now . . . if you travel the US, you are more than welcome to stop by here and stay with us for a few days. And as I posted before, this is really one of my favorite places!
We're off to Hawaii next week, so I'd be happy to tell you what we found there!
Bomba-Dear
PS - Hubby works for United Airlines so we get to travel alot. It's the spending money that keeps us from travelling all the time!

I spent several years in Europe and I love the Eastern part. Romania, in spite of the poverty and dirt, is one of the most beautiful places I know and the history just oozes out --- Transylvania and all that ya know. Budapest is also wonderful for culture and history.
If you stay in Canada and head east, please feel free to crash at my place. It's a great old century house and I rattle around it so there's lots of space. Stirling is a one horse town but real friendly and only 20 minutes from the 401 -- on your way anywhere. If you haven't experienced eastern Canada, (NS, NB, PEI, NFLD) it really is worth the trip --- different life style down there all together.

At the present time, Australia is #1 on the list of places we would like to see. Empy spent 3 months travelling downunder last year and you won't find a better group of people anywhere.

We've never been to a tropical island yet. Jim has us drooling with the list of exotic Carribean spots he has visited.

Hawaii is another dream destination. On our trip to California in Feb., we were very tempted to do something completely impulsive and show up at Rapid Tac Roger's home.

Ya ever think about coming to Airdrie, I'll kill ya'.

Hey, how 'bout Anaheim, CA!!!!
Disneyland, the beach, blondies and best of all.......IN N OUT BURGER!!!!!!!!

Jees why'd I ever leave!!??

Honestly Steve, I had a month to spend in Europe and traveled extensively....Austria, Tangier Africa, All over Italy and France, London England but I had the best time in Spain. Toremolinos, Barcelona were a few cities but, Madrid and Seville were my favorite.

If you wouldn't mind traveling with a tour group then that's the way to go to save $$$$$$$$$!! Plus the guides take you to all the cool spots....the Vatican, the Colloseum, Notre Dame but boy you get sick of Cathedrals fast and end up being an agnostic like me.

Hope that helps!

Thanks everyone for the input.

At this time I'm leaning toward Australia.... I think. I was thinking about January or February of next year, that's their summer isn't it?

Is there any word of any Letterhead meets in and around that time? Anyone???

Thanks,
Steve

Well, I was going to suggest Lake Havasu City, Arizona but in January and February it may be a bit chilly to enjoy the lake with highs in the lower 60's.
If you are into hiking and other outdoor activities though, Havasu is definitely a place to check out.
I vacationed to Havasu for about 5 years up until about a year and a half ago, then I moved here. After my first visit, I knew I wanted to live here.
My life centers around the lake (the biggest reason I moved here) and I included some links to photos I've taken at the bottom of this post.

If you are interested in going overseas and want an interesting time, I suggest going to Asia. I spent some time in Hong Kong with a former employer and although I worked most of the time, I could see that if I were on vacation I could have some fun there. It's definitely a world apart from the norm, and I never apreciated the US more than I do now.

october 19th 20th 21st wallnuts weekend!!!

i will have all the details ready by the weekend for steve to post here

a few of us went down to the blue mountians to see the town (portland)last weekend and had a ball

the pub is great and the cook is a top bloke who just keeps the food coming

the first night in town we got told that the pub's resturant was getting painted inside in the next week or so, that was all Ace needed to know as he grabed a pencil out of my bag and started doing a 'waiting for letterheads' sketch straight on the wall.

we mock-blocked and bricked, we shaded and scripted and in the end we had a fairly resonable 4' square design

i got a phone call from our 2001 host this morning telling me that the painters arrived and we NOT impressed when they had to try and remove the pencil cause it just smeared all down the wall...
hehehe
they should have used turps to start with eh!
thank heavens devo got a pic of it before we left

come to Oz for your vacation and paint the town red.... and blue, green, yellow, orange
the walls we are working on are brick and corrie.... and there are heaps of em

ticks and his crew will have the best job over the 3 day event cause they gets to work on the old movie stuff for the picture theatre, 'Murder in the Blue Mountians' (silent movie) was actually made not far from Portland and the host Ron Bidwell has got one of the old posters to reproduce

all in all this meeting is gunna be biger than ben hur!

we are gunna need heaps of heads to get the whole town done so pack a bag u lot!

regards
gail
